it's usually with the whole senpai/waifu thing
This, and i am not innocent of this either. Female characters usually get the best customization options in game though.
I think girls using male characters is more to stop harassment than anything. Even though probably 80% of female avatars are run by men, you still get the creepy whispers when you play as one.
I like cute things.
When presented with an option of gender, I'll usually pick whatever I think looks the best after playing around with character creation, and if they are comparable, I also like to check out story options and different builds in games where a gender has different story options and/or skills sets. Mass Effect has a few that I would have missed, had I not played FemShep.
I have never gotten why people always read so much into stuff like this in video games.
I do like to wear a lot of colorful clothes myself though. As seen in my picture I have a blue cloak on a green Chinese robe and so on.
In games where you can customise your appearance, if I'm creating a human or human-like character I would go for female because I don't want to create multiple alts all of whom look almost exactly the same. It's boring.
However for non-humans, e.g. beast races, tiny races, elemental races etc I do create both male and female characters depending on what is available.
Also there's the question of hairstyle, male humans usually get buzzcut, short spiky, long, afro, maybe mohawk and that's it. Sure there are a few different short spikies and longs, but at the end of the day they all look samey. Meanwhile females can get lots of really different looks just with long hair alone.
And I'm a big kitana fan.
I visit steam and other account websites often, so I would rather see something attractive in the bottom-right corner than a close up of some sweaty meme dude
