The whole ideaq of hacking plays on people's ignorance. In reality a hacker is usually an insider who knows a password or an exploitable glitch in the security system. Most hacks are inside jobs and the perps are mostly a bunch of cheesed-off junior employees rather than any kind of IT genius in a dark room.

The biggest hack I saw this year was the Census Day Massacre.

Late this year, the Australian Federal Government performed an online Census. The Census was attacked by foreign groups and the website was completely shut down for days. Not through some genius bit of hacking, but because the utter stupidity of Census officials and IBM's server staff.

See, some dingus at IBM had forgotten to engage proper security measures just before the Census went live - they essentially forgot to turn their Antivirus on. They also forgot to lock their servers to connections outside of Australia. With so much personal data ripe for the stealing, cyber criminals bombarded the virtually undefended servers with a Botnet and sure enough they came crashing down. And stayed down for days.

No darkened rooms, no teenage geniuses, just a few medicore employees not doing their jobs right. That's how real hacking works.
