Why do people like 2001 a space odyssey?

I don't get it. Why does everyone treat it like the holy grail of chinema?

I'm wondering the same, I always find that movie boring as ♥♥♥♥ and i'm a fan of Kubrick but I do like the sequel : 2010 The Year We Make Contact. That movie just explains everything that happens in 2001 a space odyssey or at least tried to show a vision of it..

I actually hated it. It just kept on going on and on. I know HAL is a super computer, but even my friend, who has a hearing problem can't read lips when viewing someone from the side of their face.

Thats my biggest complaint about the movie in general. Its so horribly slow.

Kubrick could've done so much better with this, yet he didn't. At least he didn't span it out on three-four movies like Peter Jackson.

The movie is not about Hal or computer... It's about The Monolith, Space Formation, Life's, The Sun et cetera...!

There are lots of things that make 2001 an amazing film

2001 gave birth to sci fi as we know it today. If you look at other science fiction films of the same era they are pretty much all dorky,B rate, monster of the week type movies. 2001 was the first major budget movie to approach the genre in an intellectual manner.

Another thing that makes 2001 an all time classic are the special effects. Watch an episode of star trek (which at that time was renowned for its top notch special effects) then compare those special effects to 2001. Every time I watch 2001 blows me away just how well the special effects have held up over the years.

2001 was also the first movie to ever show the pure silence in the vacuum of space. Before 2001 most people didn't know that there is no sound in space

I could go on like this all day. But I pretty much hit all the major reasons why 2001 has earned its place in movie history
