I mixed them together because they have a lot in common. but if you were to choose the genres being picked what would they be?

man i wasn't sure how to vote, i play alot of rts but rarely against other players and total war is more of a mix of multiplayer, strategy, sandbox. Went with multiplayer because world of warcraft is a big part of my gaming alongside strategy games.

The problem is that there is so many genres that you can't list them all in a strawpoll.

First for me it was FPS, then RPG games (hated turn based games anyway)

I actually think the best way is to separate by category:

Time

• Real-time.
  
• Turn-based.
  
• Effectively-turn-based (discrete events).

Dimensions (gameplay, not graphics)

• 6DoF.
  
• Regular 3D (with a vertical axis).
  
• 2D XZ (with a vertical axis).
  
• 2D XY (top down).
  
• Non-specific.

Players

• Multiplayer.
  
• Massively.
  
• Solo.

Player Conflict

• Co-op (dedicated).
  
• Teams.
  
• Individual.

Purpose

• Single combat.
  
• Strategic (variable unit mix).
  
• Tactical (fixed unit count).
  
• Puzzle.

Unit Customization

• None.
  
• Weapons & Basic.
  
• RPG.

Eg:

• Starcraft is Real-Time, XY, Multiplayer+Solo, Individual+Teams, Strategic, None.
  
• Civ is Turn-Based, XY, Multiplayer+Solo, Individual+Teams, Strategic, None.
  
• WoW is Real-Time, 3D, Multiplayer+Solo, Individual+Teams+Co-op, Single Combat, RPG.
  
• Descent is Real-Time, 6DoF, Solo, Individual, Single Combat, Weapons & Basic.

There's exceptions everywhere, but I think dimensionality and time are usually pretty straightforward.
