Origin games wit Steam overlay
It worked before, but now it doesn`t. Tried different solutions - None helped.

Windows 10.

Any clues?

Btw in mid-August it was fine.

I think you need to use an older version of Origin. Not sure though.

I run Steam as an administrator with Origin in Windows 7 compatibility. It works as it should, but only if the shortcut is an origin:// shortcut (you can use "Inspect Element" to find the app ID).

What game are you looking to use Steam with?

It`s not working for me. Origin also resets compatibility settings to default.

Any. ME3 for now.

I have a working ME3 shortcut-- when I get on my PC I can help you out.

Okay
Space Coward Sep 28, 2017 @ 5:54pm
Here's my Mass Effect 3 shortcut. Start by making a new non-Steam shortcut, doesn't matter what you pick.

After making the shortcut, right-click it, go to Properties, and change the Address to this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Origin.exe" origin://LaunchGame/DR:230773600

"Start In" should be this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\"

You may need to change the C:\ if you have [and use] multiple hard drives for storage, and if you don't at least get ME3 launching through Steam that way, you might need a different app-id based on your region (I'd assume the app-id never changes, but you never know).

Now, as long as you can LAUNCH the game through Steam, you're in good shape. How I got the game to use the OVERLAY, then:
  • Disable the Origin In-Game overlay. This can be done through settings, or in my case, it's broken to begin with. :conwayfacepalm:
  • Find Origin.exe through the Windows Explorer (in my case it's C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin) and right-click Origin.exe. Under "Properties", find the Compatibility tab and enable compatibility mode for WINDOWS 7. After confirming that, restart Origin if it's open.
    • Side note: I have no clue why this works, I read it on the Titanfall forums and for one reason or another it helps to break Origin's overlay without messing up the client too much.
  • For Steam.exe, [C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam] go to that same Compatibility tab and check "Run as Administrator." After confirming that, restart Steam if you have it open.
Another side-note: From now on, you'll need to do a little User Account Control pop-up every time Steam launches. A minor annoyance, but worth it imo for Origin games and even many of the older Steam games (2005-2009 especially) that won't use the Steam overlay without it.
  • You may need to use Origin as a launcher; it has options that allow it to automatically close when you exit the game. Depending on your computer (no clue why) you may need to actually have Origin closed before the game opens for it to show up, so this helps to make Origin act like a simple game launcher rather than a client of its own. I'll explain further if necessary.
Quick edit: there's one more step if you use an AMD graphics card. Scroll down to post 10 if you've got any kind of Radeon or R7/R9/RX graphics card.
Good luck!

Thanks. Too bad it`s not working for me.

Do you have an AMD graphics card? If so, I forgot to mention that the AMD External Events Utility needs to be disabled as well-- it also conflicts with Origin, and doesn't do anything useful from what I've seen.

You need to disable it under Services, the Services menu should come up if you search it using the Start Menu.

Good to hear! If you update your drivers, AMD External Events will turn itself back on, so make sure to disable it again next time you update.

Any other Origin games you're trying to run through Steam?

Yes. SW:BF. More in future.

Assuming you mean EA Battlefront 1, the code seems to be
Origin.OFR.50.0000940
It's either that or just OFR.50.0000940

That would mean...
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Origin.exe" origin://LaunchGame/Origin.OFR.50.0000940
(Remove "Origin" from the code if the first one doesn't work)
Start In:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\

You'll need to make that Origin shortcut again, but rather than "DR:...." (the Mass Effect 3 code) you'll need to use that one. If you mean EA Battlefront II, I can't help you there since I don't own it.

I'm finding these by going to my Origin library with Google Chrome and using Inspect Element. The game ID is usually a line or two above the actual game's URL address, so I can just search "star-wars-battlefront" or "mass-effect" and it pops up as one of the results. These are the same commands that you would use to select a game from Google Chrome and click play, so you'll need to be logged in if you want to find them yourself.

I usually just add the Origin client as a Non-Steam shortcut. Works flawlesly.
