When is mature humour ok?
So... I'm currently working on a little project that's a little... um, "insensitive." Not going into detail, but's the main theme is kindergardners dreaming their super-violent mercenries a la Far Cry.
My question is- when does raunchy or outlandish humour go to far? When is it meaningful, and when it is just tastless? What are some good (and bad) examples of mature humour done right?
Edit- Just want to say I love the amount of helpful feedback I got. Means a lot to a indie producer like me.
CONCLUSION- While I have nothing against Mature Humour (if done correctly) I decided to change the current project. It's not because of the subject matter- I'd love to come back to it someday. It's that... well, right now, Life kinda sucks and I don't feel like devoting time and effort to a subject that's kind of a one-off joke. I want to make something with a little more substance (and to actually learn how to make a decent FPS.) Bottom line is- I don't feel like being funny if the joke is just kinda silly like the one above. If I want humour, I want to channel eveything going on right now and make something with a little more teeth than kids dreaming of being Mercs.
Thanks for the input-
Warm(ish)

look at disney ......as with all things I think you have to get your audience to join the dots rather than you flat out SHOW them

You mean like, Gaston is the sole reason the egg market in the coutnry has been destroyed?
not really .....more like this

As long as it fits in the context and stretch of the story nothing's out of limits, but for example, going for sexual jokes and innuendos in your context right now ( kids dreaming of being mercs ) is unfunny because they're kids, they don't think like that and that's outstretched unless the kids are 12 then it could be realistic
Are you kidding? You ever worked with kids before? They can sometimes be the most violent and insensitve people out there simply because they don't get the reality of violence. My buds and me used to pretend to be soldiers, and in hindsight we dreamed up some realy disturbing and violent scenarios. My little brother can watch whatever violent thing he wants and claims it doesn't affect him, but I watch how he acts and it does.
My brothers friends are even worse. He comes home all the time telling tales about how his friends want to stick Trump in a log cabin and saw him alive, and make up stoires where the heroes shoot the bad guys to a skelaton with machine guns.
So I don't know how the kids are in your area are, but truth is, they'll probably do much better than my bro and his friends ;)

Well, if I had more time or a larger budget maybe. All the player gets is the concept, some in-game hints, and maybe a little dialouge hints (like the kids not knowing how to swear so they make up their own words)

Are you sure that it's not just the result of american culture?
No...
I am POSITIVE that's the result of US culture. As a disclaimer, not everyone here is like that. But a good portion are.

No, as far as I remember, that accurately describes the average kid here in Canada. Children are animals, that's hardly unique to the US. Keep in mind, kids don't act and speak the same way around adults as they do with their friends.

I mean, it's not like the UK has the best track record when it comes to violence (although the same could be said for US.) But Tom and Jerry? Seems like such a werid thing to ban...
Don't tell me there's no Rick and Morty either...

See that's the thing. In most cartoons, Tom just wanted to be left alone because he wanted to take a nap.
Dooks 25/set./2017 às 14:26
this is not showing my reply so sorry if it appears twice!
tom and gerry was banned in the uk as it was "too violent" ......to this day I have never seen anyone attacked with an anvil/broom/shovel .......so yeah .....that worked !!
but honestly even as a kid I so KNEW it wasn't reality ....we needed more credit!
