During the last election many people were told by their democrat political leaders that the other side was evil. That they were deplorable human beings and racists (that magically stayed hidden for 8 years of a black man being President but came out of the wood-work when a white woman runs for President). It was built up about how terrible the other side was.
Now if the other side would of won the election, everything would of been defused. In their minds the good side would of triumphed over evil and all was well in the world.
But since they lost the election, that defusion never occured. So you get a bunch of people who are dead set about how evil Trump is, without having the ability to back it up and say anything but what the media feeds them.
In other words a bunch of people have this false memory of fighting against evil, when in actuality they're deluded and are hateful towards other American cittizens. They've invented this false sense of who the evil guys are, and they buy into the narrative that Trump's a White Supremacist and ignore facts like blacks, latinos, minorities voted for Trump as well as the other guy.

It is caused by the way our brain works. Repetition builds up new neural connections, even if what is being repeated is completely made up. Unless the person is extremely resistant and critically-thinking, he/she will soon get to the point of believing the story, no matter whether supported by evidence or not. Then, the cognitive dissonance between the person's memories/knowledge and the accepted narrative forces them to tweak their memories/knowledge in a way that supports this narrative. And from there, these memories/knowledge become real for the person.
