Tbh I bet you anything that the "Pokemon killer" is going to be a new IP that isn't already out. That, or Nintendo squanders the Pokemon brand into dust.
The latter will most likely happen, at some point.
Digimon was always aimed at slightly older audiences than pokemon. The series deathblow was basically when they targeted younger kids in the 4th generation after tamers. Which alienated older fans.
Pokemon games while fun are getting dumbed down so much. Like almost no trainer in sun/moon has more than 2-3 pokemon. And affection lets you cure status affects, get crits, dodge attacks, ect. The pokemon X Y elite 4 only use 4 pokemon.
Not that most digimon games were ever good outside digimon world 1 or one of the card games.
I stopped playing pokemon games when Diamond version came out. So obviously I haven't tried to keep up-to-date with how the franchise is going today. Still, there might be a chance for Digimon to make a comeback. Feels a bit like David vs. Goliath to me, but you never know.
Digimon was one of my fav things when I was a kid <3
But.... tbh I don't think it'll make a comeback.
There're just to many monster themed shows and games. And all the former digimon fans are grown up now. and most of them couldn't care less. So....well.
*I have yet to watch Digimon tri.... somehow I just never find the time :P
I gave the generation before the new one a try. But the main character I remember being so annoying. The gimick being he's a digimon that merges with groups of other digimon like a megazord. And the whole plot was "I'm going to be the digimon king". Which is one of the most boring and bland plots you can pick.
Rika in tamers was going to be "Digimon queen" but that was just a sub plot. Not the whole show's plot.
You mean Xros wars?
(or whatever it's name was) well.. I didn't even give that one a try. And the new Digimon look ridicolous.... except for that Mad Leomon. Which looked pretty badass.
The main issue is that the Pokemon series is prolonging the age of the protagonist that it seems a breastplate stretcher on an open field... If at least the series developed like in Pokemon Special with many focus characters for each saga and also some easter eggs from past characters...
On the other hand Digimon has a lot of law changes and dimensions that is hard to follow look at the transition from Digimon 02 to Tamers, is a fricking parallel world with only one character (the one from the flashback of the origin of the digimon emperor)in common only because he decided to hop in that world in an game that I doubt was released here. And afterwards is a clownfiesta of Digimon world Resets without a slight reference of previous heroes nor events (Except the original adventure saga where they mention previous chosen kids in the first part Myotismon arc I guess) and a weird time travel chapter reunion chapter power ranger style with the previous generations leaders reunion (Xros wars I think?)
Although in Adventure tri they are trying to tie in the plotholes and spaghetti continuity.
And that's all
There was one season where he was almost going to face the elite 4 and he only lost because his charizard decided to disobey completely and cost him the match, through no fault of his own.
That charizard is cancer. Ash has collected so many badges at this point. And saved its life so many times.
