It was actually a real thing. Someone even attempted to assassinate a king by feeding him a tomato.
If I remember correctly George Washington (or some other great general leader guy) ate a tomato in from of his men to prove to them that they were not poisonous.

it wasnt the all because of the lead plates though because tomatoes are acidic so the acid disolves (idk) the lead and the lead goes into the tomatoes. some bread or something wouldnt have been as poisonous
