just make sure you have good cooler
Its actually really easy, because of the way the Z97 UEFI interface is setup.
First go into BIOS (press delete when booting up).
Go to the tab that says "OC" on the left side of the screen. Change the "CPU ratio" to whatever value you're trying to overclock. Start small though. Like 44 (which will make 4.4 ghz). I don't remember if I changed my ring ratio, but it's set to 40.
Go down to voltage and set everything to auto with the exception of "Digital Power" (set that to 1.950) and "VCCIN power" set that to 1.250).
Save and then restart. Make sure you have something like HWmonitor to see the temperature and power output on your CPU. The i7-4790k gets really hot, and I would hope you aren't using the stock cooler that came with it. Aftermarket liquid cooler is almost an absolute necessity.
That's already a damn fine CPU
Also i have a corsair h100i CPU cooler.
I had it over clocked to 4.6Ghz on an Asus Z97 Pro Gamer but needed to replace that mobo but i loved that over clock especially at 1440p gave me extra performance with the gtx1080 also.
