I've been playing these games since gen 1, and they haven't really evolved all that much over the years. In case of X and Y, it felt like a backwards step.
Maybe one day, i'll feel like giving this series another shot (not the first time i stop playing them). But because this an annual series, i don't think i'll ever have the patience to catch up. Not like i use to, when i was a wee lad.
I'm doing my first playthrough of X right now (At the 8th gym). And I can see how it'd be the game to make you quit. Its pretty awful. And in some areas I'd say its the worst pokemon there ever was, like in the forced group of friends. And team flare has no personality, depth, or anything. The main villian has almost no depth either.
Ultra has new features that make X feel like a dinosaur. There no more hm moves. Theres no more gyms (except 1), you can surf waves or fly through wormholes in minigames. The team skull is a funny and not a serious team. Your not forced to catch any legendary prior to beating the game. Theres a place called poke pelego that can train your pokemon for you. Ect.
Though most is still the same. While there are 800 pokemon Regular sun/moon only needs 300 to finish the dex. Where ultra needs 400.
I mean, i have a lot of JRPG's and Western RPG's that i've yet to play. I might go back to Pokemon once i've done so. But then again, i play a ton of RPG's, so i don't know if i will ever find the time.
Some people think sun/moon were the worst gen. Mostly because its one long cutscene story

But X and Y were so bad they didn't even make the 3rd game for them. They skipped straight into Omega ruby/Alpha sapphire.
Thats racing against the clock.
Aka. You wont win.
But i meaby buy the new game later. Its just like the normal sun and moon. Tbh. But with more content while stil the same. And besides. I got homebrew so i dont have an issue with lost event pokemons.
Also would be fun to have a special apperance by Mario and Luigi as secret unlockable characters that you have to earn.
I wish using repels also stopped trainers from battling you. Along with wild pokemon.
you beat a kid.
you rob kid for his money
kid gives you his number....
what the heck is this.
all pokemon trainers have stockholm syndrome
I didn't say X was hard, far from it. Not even that far into it they give you a mega lucario that can beat the rest of the game with.
And the game forces you into so many battles that even if you try to avoid every trainer possible its still probably going to be level 70 by the elite 4.
None of the battles were as amusing as some of the Ultra totem battles.

The Ultra Wormhole concept is really cool! From what I’ve read (and seen on YouTube), it makes shiny hunting way easier, which is something I’m going to try out when I actually beat the game... I like exploring literally everywhere.
About Ultra Necrozma, I was able to two-shot him with my Dusk Lycanroc - Splintered Stormshards and then she survived with 1 HP (Pokemon Refresh bonus!). Crunch was able to KO. And that was fun, though I actually lost the first time I tried it.
