What does steam do when people die ?
I saw a documentary on death and funerals Part of it talked about how people used the dead persons Facebook account as a memorial and so on . I am not dealing with any of this

Also IM not planning on dying any time soon It Got me thinking what does valve do with a persons account once they die .
Like suppose the relatives of the deceased did not even know about their steam account

or the passwords to get into it Does a steam account get deleted after a certain period of inactivity If the person has not used the thing in five years for example ?

How would steam handle it if A relative had a steam account with lets say over three thousand dollars worth of games and they
put in their will that they where leaving the account to their niece or nephew but they did not leave the password written down anywhere ? I mean I think the logical thing would be whatever lawer dealing with the will would have to contact steam and show them a copy of the will.

♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ nothing (if you do nothing with it)

online DRM makes the account worthless and selling it will get the account locked and or deleted depending on how steam support or valve react to you selling a dead person's account

You can give a password to a TRUSTED relative so they can use your account

you can contact steam support and request an account be deleted

the SSA contract with valve becomes void when you die

C. Your Account

When you complete Steam’s registration process, you create a Steam account ("Account"). Your Account may also include billing information you provide to Valve for the purchase of Subscriptions, Content and Services and any physical merchandise offered for purchase through Steam (“Hardware”). You may not reveal, share or otherwise allow others to use your password or Account except as otherwise specifically authorized by Valve. You are responsible for the confidentiality of your login and password and for the security of your computer system. Valve is not responsible for the use of your password and Account or for all of the communication and activity on Steam that results from use of your login name and password by you, by any person to whom you may have intentionally or by negligence disclosed your login and/or password in violation of this confidentiality provision. Unless it results from Valve’s negligence or fault, Valve is not responsible for the use of your Account by a person who fraudulently used your login and password without your permission. If you believe that the confidentiality of your login and/or password may have been compromised, you must notify Valve via the support form {LINK REMOVED} without any delay.

Your Account, including any information pertaining to it (e.g.: contact information, billing information, Account history and Subscriptions, etc.), is strictly personal. You may therefore not sell or charge others for the right to use your Account, or otherwise transfer your Account, nor may you sell, charge others for the right to use, or transfer any Subscriptions other than if and as expressly permitted by this Agreement (including any Subscription Terms or Rules of Use) or as otherwise specifically permitted by Valve.

Nothing. You may not transfer your steam account to any other person. you sign that contract when you make an account, and wills are not above the law.

In the end there is nothing stopping anyone from saying.. "Hey son/daughter, ima gonna die soon so you can have my Steam account and all relative information pertaining to it, here is my password, email and whatnot... it is yours!"

It happens.

If it can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that a new person has taken over an account, and no hijack notice has been sent or anything similar, the account can be terminated until the correct owner takes it back.

I honestly doubt steam will still be around when I eventually die.

Also accounts are non-transferrable by policy....so theres that.

If only that happened to all those 13-year-old accounts that have been sold to users who then manage to get themselves vacced.............

Meh... it happens all the time... Valve has better things to do than terminate accounts that they know will just being them more money in the end anyways.

You do realise a third party manages Steam Support not actual Valve employees??

if you can cite the source that the account was sold, the source can be verified to be the previous owner posting (such as on one of those rmt websites) and again, beyond a reasonable doubt, the account will be terminated, it happens often.

You think Steam will just fold up and we will all go back to buying games on CD's? If anything another gaming site will take over... eg. GOG. But Steam will be around for a very long time.......

You get put into valve's think tank and become fully enslaved by steam.

I am expecting Steam to render me honors at my funeral. A 21 game salute or something :D
Crystal Sharrd Sep 13, 2017 @ 2:56pm
I read somewhere that it's okay with Valve if you leave your account to someone else in your will, and that they consider the game licenses and SSA as being transferred to the new owner when the former owner croaked. Don't know if it's true or not, though.
