Favorite game-engines
Hi!

A game-engine is used for rendering different assets of your game; 3D-models, physics, background music and sound effects, artificial intelligence, effects, etc.
Different people have different hardware configurations, and therefor different preferences. For instance: I enjoy a game-engine that runs smoothly and has a wide variety of rendering options, that makes it run at high (unlocked) frame rates.
Whilst another, may prefer an engine that is able to make use of the most modern rendering techniques.

For example, some of my favorites are:

Goldsrc (Half-Life)
Source engine. (Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead)
Unreal engine 1 (Unreal 1)
Unreal engine 3 (Bioshock Infinate)
Serious engine 4 (The Talos Principle)

I was wondering: What games, or game-engines do you prefer, from a technical point of view? Are there any engines in particular that impress you?
If you don't know the name of the engine, but only know the name of the game, that's no problem.

My goal with this thread is to create a resource of impressive game-engines, which makes it easier for everyone to make a good purchase.

also I like the plugin / master file system used in gamebryo / Creation but on a technical level it's a miracle they even function

the original Skyrim version of Creation is also better than the F4 version

Impressive. I doubt it will run very well on my HD5870, though.
I may have to start looking for a new GPU sometime soon.

@soon: I've heard the latest Skyrim (enhanced edition) uses the 64 bit Fallout 4 engine, which requires more powerful hardware to run smooth. But there's also a benefit of having a 64 bit engine, as it's able to allocate more memory.

The Fallout 4 engine has weird memory issues that the original Skyrim doesn't.

Forgot to add the Build engine (Duke Nukem 3D, Blood, Shadow Warrior, etc.).

Most will have to run it in DOSbox, because it's somewhat of a relic by todays' standards. But I think it is worth mentioning. Because it has very low requirements, for what it does.

Also id Tech 1 (Doom (original)) and the Quake engines of course.

Well, I've never done game development, so I don't have a favorite engine.

It's not completely required. It's about your favorites, not about "the best".

Take for instance the REDengine 3 (The Witcher 3). You may or may not favorite the game, but you may still appreciate how the game is being rendered from a technical point of view.

It doesn´t have to be about first person shooters alone. For example the engine StarCraft 2 uses, also has a lot of work put in it.

There are no wrong answers.

Source/Source 2

It's literally the best FPS engine on the market, as the movement and physics allow for fast and creative movement gimmicks that other engines simply don't offer as easily.

Source and Unreal 4. Source, while a pain in the rear in some ways has a special place in my heart, and its physics engine is still a blast to work with.

Unreal 4 is incredibly easy to work with, it looks great, and its Cascade particle system is amazing. I absolutely love the way Unreal 4 looks and feels. It offers so much for artists right out of the box.

Oh, and the post processing options Unreal offers are insane as well.
