Yume Nikki: super confusing but worth your time for sure.
Why am I dead at sea: Mother 3 vibes all around.
Lisa: amazing game. Seen gameplay from it and own it but havent played it yet. Everything I’ve seen looks amazing.
Hylics: looks super weird and interesting.
Upcoming:
Knuckle Sandwhich: this is the big one. I’ve never seen a game that gave me a bigger Earthbound vibe.
YIIK: this is looking like a great RPG. It draws inspiration from Earthbound for sure.
Omori: no idea of the state of this project but it gives me earthbound horror y vibes.
Mother 4: Fan project. Might get a new name and apparantly there is talk about a commercial release if that happens. All just rumours afaik but the project looks amazing check it out if you havent already.
Oh, and Jimmy & The Pulsating Mass comes out August 7th. Not long now! I just wish the demo would actually be on Steam...
Haha thanks I kinda went overboard with that, but there's a ton of weird and offbeat rpgs and games I could recommend on other systems, or on itch.io or something. Earthbound is pretty great, but there's so many games now that do that formula just as good if not better.
I am also looking forward to Jimmy & the Pulsating Mass. Knuckle Sandwich now has a short demo out too. Omori I believe is slowly, but surely being worked on; it sucks for those who backed it, but work is happening (I'd recommend checking the Kickstarter page). A lot of the others I listed are pretty much in the same boat unfortunately (Ikenfell, GLITCHED, Mother 4, Kingdoms of the Dump, UFO 50, etc.)
And I'm going to a large video game convnention this Saturday!
ERMAHGERD A FELLOW SOGGY
-Why Am I Dead at Sea? (Art style very similar to Mother 3)
-Wizorb (Not like Earthbound in the slightest, but a mix between Breakout and RPGs that I'd figure some may enjoy)
-Monster Garden (don't know much about this one, but it's an rpg maker game that looks pretty bizarre)
-System Goose Overload (kinda looks like undertale in a way, but I think it's a bit of a stealth game too??)
-Suits: A Business RPG (kinda looks like OFF, but definitely much less serious than that game)
-Soma Spirits Rebalance (Really unknown RPG Maker game made by a forum goer on Starmen.net)
-Psychonauts (3D platformer with psychic kids where you go inside peoples' minds. There's even a level when you become a kaiju and wreck ♥♥♥♥ up- it's such a good game)
-Yume Nikki (just got released to steam. The 3D remake is more of a cinematic platformer, but Ive heard some decent things about it.)
-Wuppo ( kind of like Paper Mario + Kirby + Yoshi's Island + Metal Slug?)
-Saturday Morning RPG (don't know much about this one; bought it on a whim during a summer sale)
-Night in the Woods (I'd imagine most people have heard of this game, but a pretty quirky adventure game about a college dropout who came back home and has absolutely nothing to do except hang out with friends and solve mysteries around town)
-Magic Wand (Created by the same guy who made Space Funeral and Goblet Grotto. It's an experience)
-Cave Story (undertale but a metroidvania. frisk has a gun)
-Hylics (a monstrosity woven of clay and rpg maker)
-Penny Arcade Adventures 1-4, Breath of Death VII, and Cthulhu Saves the Earth (don't know much about these either)
-Costume Quest 1&2 (two adorable rpgs from Double Fine, same developer of psychonauts, where you go trick-or-treat-ing and fight monsters)
-Cosmic Star Heroine (From the same developers of Breath of Death; Sci-fi RPG in the style of Chrono Trigger- looks ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome)
-Anachronox (Late 90s, early 2000s western rpg in the style of a jrpg)
-Count Lucanor (Kinda looks more like a horror game, but gives me some EB/Mother vibes)
-Baobabs Mausoleum (episode 1 came out last spring and episode 2 is coming out later this month)
-Citizens of Earth (Game was picked up by Atlus after the Kickstarter failed. I played this for a little while. It was alright, but corners were cut in presentation, and it's also kinda glitchy. Encounter rate is way too high. Got bored with it after like 5 or 8 hours)
-Boot Hill Heroes (Earthbound, but in the wild west)
-2064: Read Only Memories (game in the style of Snatcher, but with a bunch of LGBT characters. Pretty neat alternative to snatcher)
-Diaries of a Spaceport Janitor (you clean up trash at an alien spaceport. you can change your gender to stupid ♥♥♥♥ too)
-Dujanah (I have no idea what the hell is going on in this game, but looks great)
-OneShot (upgraded steam version to a free rpg maker adventure game. the pixel-art is adorable)
-Where They Cremate the Road Kill (Looks a bit like Middens and Gingiva)
-Beyond Good & Evil (More like a 3D zelda game, but weird nonetheless. Came from the same great mind behind the Rayman games; sort of like Psychonauts, which is why I recommend it)
-Adventure Time: Secret of the Nameless Kingdom (More Link to the Past than Earthbound, but it's also Adventure Time, so it's quirky and off-beat. The music really gives me that EB feel)
-Iconoclasts (metroidvania that just came out; heard it had an emotional story and has awesome pixelart. may be like EB, but not entirely sure)
-A Hat in Time (lot's of Paper Mario influence here in a really awesome 3d platformer)
-Shadows of Adam (homage to snes-rpgs of yore. Looks pretty high quality, but more Lufia, Breath of Fire, and Final Fantasy than EB)
-Phantasy Star IV (Best Sega Genesis JRPG. Period)
-OK K.O.: Let's Play Heroes (Based on the Cartoon Network Show; RPG elements with a beat'em up battle system)
-Princess Remedy (look like they belong on the ZX Spectrum, but look fun anyway)
-Two Brothers (got taken off of steam, but looked neat despite being very glitchy)
-Creepy Castle (cute looking game in the style of an old 8-bit pc game)
-Thimbleweed Park (Point n' Click game in the style of old Lucasarts adventure games. Small town, weird cults, a vulgar clown who hates his life, X-files references, all here)
-High Strangeness (Someone already mentioned this, but I figured I'd mention it too since it's generally unknown)
-Hello Charlotte
-Doom & Destiny, and Doom & Destiny Advanced
-Evoland 2
-Dropsy (point & click adventure game, but without dialogue; colorful, happy, and surreal)
-Voodoo Vince (Kinda like Psychonauts; you play as a voodoo doll who hurts himself to hurt other enemies around you. has a sweet jazz soundtrack too)
-Dashbored (idk what to say for this game tbh)
-West of Loathing (I can't believe I forgot about adding this game to the list initially)
-Steven Universe: Save the Light (game based on the show in the style of Paper Mario. Hell yeah)
-Minit (A zelda style game where you become cursed from a sword you find and only have 60 seconds to live. NPCs are funny and weird, so I guess it counts)
-Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass (Has an 'empathy' system where you empathize with the bosses you defeat, which lets you transform into them to solve puzzles in the overworld and use new abilities in battles. I love how this game looks, I love its music, and I heard its story is absolutely awesome so I'm excited to play this)
-Crossing Souls (action RPG inspired by EB, Stranger Things, and 80s culture. The pixel-art is super detailed and I heard the story is actually pretty good. Gotta love Devolver Digital picking up unique projects, huh?)
-The Longest Five Minutes (from Nippon Ichi, who has finally decided to release games on steam. This is an interesting departure from their usual Anime-style games, which is refreshing. Thank you to Andrew for reminding me of this game.)
-Nepenthe (kinda looks like a 5 year old created the assets for this game. But I guess it's a parody rpg too so idk check it out)
-Legendary Gary (I'm not too interested in this one, but some people might be, so I'll include it)
-Light Apprentice (I think this is actually a mobile port, but looks pretty cool actually. Artwork is bordering on good and bad-DevientArt-posts though)
-Mothlight (Free RPGMaker game.)
-Future Proof (I think this may be more of a puzzle game, but still)
-Boot Hill Bounties (I actually didnt even know another Boot Hill Game was even going to come out)
-Creekside Creep Invasion
-LiEat
-Rakuen
-Changed
-KoiKoi
-Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion
-Kilcount
-Galaxy of Pen & Paper
-Void Pyramid
-My Big Sister
-Wooden Ocean
-Mercury: Cascade Into Madness
-The Voice in the Void
-SAKeRETSU
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's also a bunch of games outside of Steam:
-Opoona (wii) (a JRPG from Koei. Honestly unlike anything I've ever seen from Koei)
-Live A Live (snes) (Japanese only snes rpg from Squaresoft with 7 different storylines taking place in unique settings- one with a cowboy, one with a caveman, one with a wrestler, one with a robot, etc. etc. Possibly the best rpg on the system next to Chrono Trigger and Eathbound)
-Space Funeral (pc) (already mentioned freeware rpg maker game. offbeat humor, horror, ugly artwork- what more could you want? There's also stuff like OFF, Gingiva, Middens, and a bunch of other free rpg maker games out there similar to EB, but I don't know all of them off the top of my head. just don't expect amazing gameplay or anything- it is RM2k3)
-Mario RPGs (snes, n64, gcn, gba, ds, 3ds, wii) (can't get enough of them)
-Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime (ds) (Colorful as ♥♥♥♥. Kinda like Mario & Luigi games.)
-Okage: Shadow King (ps2) (Tim-Burton-esque visuals in a jrpg where you sell your soul to a demon)
-3D Dot Game Heroes (ps3) (Parody of the original Zelda from the makers of Dark Souls. Not exactly Earthbound, but just cool and parodies a genre kinda like Earthbound)
-Chulip (ps2) (weird-ass japanese game that came from Punchline, one of the daughter companies from Love-de-Lic. I think you have to kiss townsfolk to level up? Really weird)
-Shin Megami Tensei Series: Persona (ps1, ps2, psp, ps3, psv, ps4), Nocturne (ps2) and SMT IV (3ds), Digital Devil Saga 1&2 (ps2), and Devil Summoner 1&2 (ps2) (huge jrpg franchise that sets itself apart with dark adult themes and incredible style. Tons of other games in the series, but I believe these are the most popular/recommended titles. Inspired Undertale as well)
-Moon: RPG Remix Adventure (ps1 (another game that inspired undertale. Don't know much about this other than it's a japan exclusive ps1 game that still hasn't seen a translation. From Love-de-Lic)
-Shadow Hearts 1-3 (ps2) (jrpg franchise that is just ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ crazy; take place in the early 20th century and there's aliens and vampires and god knows what else)
-Tomato Adventure (gba) (from the makers of the Mario & Luigi games; unfortunately JP only, but the fan-translator for Mother 3 recently did a partial translation for some of the dialogue and completely translated items and menus)
-Ganparu: Gunman's Proof (snes) (Zelda Clone, but you're a cowboy and there's an alien invasion. May or may not have blackface in the game. If you enjoy cringing at 1920s style racism, you should check out the Squaresoft's Tom Sawyer game on the famicom.)
-Professor Layton and the Last Specter (ds) (All of the Professor Layton games are really good, but this one in particular has an extra lifesim rpg where you create an avatar and live in a little London; the art-style for this part of the game looks EXACTLY like Mother 3's pixel-art)
-Robotrek (snes) (cute jrpg where you make your own mechs; Enix made some real neat snes games tbh)
-Magical Vacation and Starsign (gba & ds) (from the developers of Mother 3; sound like basic jrpgs to me, but I figured I'd give them a mention)
-Kappa's Trail (3ds?) (another Brownie Brown game, developer of Mother 3. I bought this years ago on my Dsi. It was so surreal too because the game has a ton of references to Mother 3 in there and it was actually released in the west!! The game itself is alright- kinda frustrating, but a neat game)
-UFO: A Day in the Life (ps1) (Another Love-de-Lic game. I have no clue what's going on here, but looks neat)
-Dual Hearts (Ps2) (Action JRPG that's basically the Japanese equivalent to Psychonauts)
-Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden & Kanye Quest (joke/meme games before meme games were that popular. Apparently there's a Barkley 2 that had a Kickstarter 6 years ago, and the last update was about a year ago... so...)
-Spud's Adventure (gb) (you play as a potato)
-Startropics 1&2 (nes) (time travel, aliens, yo-yos, 90s attitude, it's all here in this short lived nintendo franchise)
-Zelda: Link's Awakening DX, Oracle of Seasons & Ages, and the Minish Cap (gbc & gba) (the handheld zelda titles are much more bizarre than the console games)
-Twisted Tales of Spike McFang (snes) (you're a vampire, but like the cutest one to ever exist and you fight tomatoes)
-Arn's Winter Quest: Gway Edition (one of Toby Fox's OTHER EB rom hacks that like two people know about and I'm one of them)
-Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia, and Terranigma (snes) (Action RPGs made by Quintet that have some strange dialogue and sci-fi elements to their stories)
-Secret of Evermore (snes) (Action rpg where you're from the 90s and you travel back to prehistoric times. The snes had some wild ♥♥♥♥ back then)
-Contact (ds) (from Grasshopper Manufacture (Suda 51) that is an action rpg, but only kind of, and Dr. Andonuts is there, kind of. Weird as hell and that's what makes it good)
-FLESHCHILD (pc) (Yume Nikki clone... Sort of. play this game on the name alone)
-7th Saga (snes) (Unique, but tough-as-nails jrpg)
-Crusader of Centy/Soleil (More Zelda/Wonder Boy, but you eventually lose your ability to talk to Human NPCs and can only talk to animals. Pretty awesome game from the looks of it alone.)
-Paladin's Quest & Lennus 2 (snes) (Also really unique, but just weird)
-Lagrange Point (nes) (sci-fi jrpg from Konami. Think of it as a fully sci-fi Phantasy Star I guess. possibly the most technically impressive nes game)
-God Medicine (gb) (you play as a group of kids who go into a video game and become heroes. Heard it kind of sucks though)
-Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland and Tingle's Balloon Trip of Love (ds) (Games where Tingle is the lead character instead of some creep in the mainline zelda titles. From Skip Ltd., another company that split-off from Love-de-Lic and made the Chibi Robo games, so you know they're going to be great)
-Maka Maka , Verne World, Idea no Hi, G-O-D: Mezameyo to Yobu Koe ga Kikoe, Gokinjo Boukentai, Hourai High, Madou Monogatari: Big Kindergarten Kids, Tengai Makyou Series, Linda Cube Again, Daikaijuu Monogatari 1&2, Moryo Senki Madara 1&2, Solid Runner, Love Quest, Aurora Quest (other JP-only rpgs)
-Kirby: Planet Robobot (3ds) (The ESP power up is a direct reference to EB; Super Star also references EB. Mass Attack also has a sub-game that plays like a turn-based RPG. I love Kirby a lot)
-Reverie (PsVita & PS4) (It's a Zelda clone, but it's in New Zealand)
-Metal Saga (The entire Metal Max series is pretty off-kilter [like Metal Max Returns], but this is one of the few in the series to be brought over to the west and holy sh*t this game is balls-off-the-wall insanity. I may be hyperbolizing, but you can 'beat' the game, *WITHOUT CHEATS OR GLITCHES*, like 5 minutes into it. Also there's tanks with legs.)
-Brave Hero Yuusha (Freeware RPG Maker game that is a homage to old famicom RPGs)
-Zelda: Majora's Mask (The more personal and disturbing Zelda title from the N64. It's pretty different for a 3D Zelda title, even today.)
-Fantasy Life (From Level 5, who made the Professor Layton, Dark Cloud, Yo-Kai Watch, and Ni No Kuni games. This started out with an artstyle strikingly similar to Mother 3, but evolved over time. Still, really cool action/simulation RPG)
-The Parmigulator (Homage to Space Funeral by the makers of Sulky Sad Bobcat.)
-Shadowrun (If you like Cyberpunk meets Dungeons & Dragons, you'll probably like these games. I'm primarily recommending the SNES and Genesis games as the newer games are more serious in tone and are a bit more like old-school PC RPGs)
-Sweet Home (the NES predecessor to Resident Evil. It's actually based on a Japan-only horror movie, but the game itself can be played without seeing this movie. It probably plays better than the original resident evil games too lol)
-Pokemon (I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ guess)
-Lonely Star (Not sure if it's dead or not, but this game looks real cool. A demo is aviailable, but not sure when the full game is coming, or if it will at all. I believe it had a failed Kickstarter, so who knows at this point)
-UFO 50 (Like the Action 52, but is made by the creators of Spelunky, Downwell, and some other games. I'm really excited for this game, but I have no idea if it's coming out this year or not. Recommending because some of the subgames have that weird/sci-fi/horror/comedy RPG/Adventure vibe I look for.)
-YIIK (Been in development since like 2012, but may finally get released this spring. Kind of a mix between Earthbound, Persona, and Warioware; may be too 'hipster' for some tastes, but I think it looks amazing)
-Ikenfell (kind of like Harry Potter meets Little Witch Academia meets Earthbound. Has unfortunately been put on a slight hiatus due to the artist having some medical issues and struggling to release it this year. The project is still going strong, but won't be released until 2019)
-Knuckle Sandwich (This one is getting slightly more popular thanks to a successful kickstarter and streamers like Vinesauce promoting it. You just moved into a new town and you got a job at a burger joint. It's another game that seems normal at first but then becomes incredibly disturbing as you go along, or maybe it just has a really dark sense of humor)
-Kingdoms of the Dump (I'm really liking where this one is going. You play a sentient trashcan in a world made of garbage with a battle system similar to Live A Live. I hope this project continues forward. Originally started as an Earthbound hack, believe it or not.)
-Avast: Scourge of the Seas (found this out through the Starmen.net forums. Still pretty early in development it looks like, but think of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga mixed with Earthbound, and give it a pirate theme)
-Omori (This game is still alive, but development switched to another engine and as a result is taking longer than expected)
-GLITCHED (another kickstarter project, and this one I think has TWO demos out. I'm so glad to be living in a time where projects like these are succeeding and becoming a reality)
-Sulky Sad Bobcat and the Misfit Mascots (started out as a space funeral fan-sequel but eventually turned into a bubsy fan-game and finally became it's own thing that parodies 90s mascot games like bubsy and even conker. So far looks pretty cool)
-Ooblets (pokemon meets harvest moon. From Double Fine, of all companies)
-CHiLD (I dont know anything about this game at all)
-Hylics 2 (oooh boy)
-Orogenesis (A "Neo-funk" RPG- whatever the hell that means. Still, the artlook looks like a positively insane version of Link's Awakening and a little bit of OFF thrown in for good measure, so I'm liking it already)
-"Mother 4" (The infamous fan-game that has been in development for almost a decade. I put it in quotes as the team was given a DMCA last year and have been taking their time rebranding it- no name has been given yet. Judging by how Nintendo has given DMCAs to fan projects recently, it makes me wonder that Nintendo is planning on making an official sequel to Mother 3. This is just my own speculation, but hey, it may be in the realm of possibilities)
Moved some of the games that have been released to the Released games sections, and slightly edited the list. I'm hoping to make a full master-list of games in Google Docs some day, probably without all of the descriptions though. I really only wanted to fix a few things, but, again, I went overboard lol.
I also just noticed this, but are you being serious? It's a lot like Earthbound, but I don't think it's in the same universe.
Was supposed to come out today; not sure what happened.
