So many floor 10 deaths...
Damn you rescued robot character!
HEAL FASTER! THEY ARE KICKING THE BLOODY DOORS IN!
LoL?
I'm a patient man, so I don't mind waiting. Think of this as an investment! suikoden was awesome, I owned 3 and 5. Disgaea is something I threw on my wishlist and plan on checking out in the future. Phantom Brave I'll have to look into, the title sounds interesting.
The music from Lisa sounds terrifying... I've looked into it before but it creeps me out xD
@Yuiko you're not wrong, but doesn't quite fit the bill :P
@Narc that was a pretty good game, my second playthrough I actually enjoyed more (seemed easier, first playthrough I got absolutely slaughtered almost every fight, dunno what I changed but it worked better lol)
Dungeon of the Endless was pretty solid. Played with some friends and we did pretty decent. I might have to redownload that and drag them back into it lol. Do you know if the characters you obtained save even if you uninstall?
You could buy an rpg maker like MV/ACE/ect and create your own characters to collect.
On Steam, pick up Eternal Senia, Khimera: Destroy All Monster Girls, and Saira. Three very different games but they're all free. Eternal Senia is an action RPG with an involved storyline, Khimera is an action platformer with a few nods to Mega Man, and Saira is an exploration platformer.
Off Steam, pick up some of the following:
* Cave Story, an adventure/action platformer with exploration and storytelling elements. Has a remake on Steam.
* La-Mulana, an adventure-archaeologist 2D metroidvania platformer. has a remake on Steam which is a bigger improvement over it than Cave Story is over its original. Warning: difficult.
* Celestial Mechanica: a 2D metroidvania adventure platformer, relatively short.
* Stepmania: a rhythm game, basically a freeware version of DDR and a few related games. You'll need to find or make your own stepfiles, but there are a bunch of stepfile packs out there.
* Picky Pop: a casual puzzle game involving matching numbers in a dominoes-like way. on itch.io.
* Eden's Aegis: a bullet hell shmup
* Sage Fusion: a point-and-click adventure with RPG mechanics, including multiple playable characters. on itch.io.
* Nethack: a classic roguelike game, which you can play even without graphics (all you need is a terminal window that can display ASCII and that can telnet into a server). Actually, any of the classic roguelike games (Rogue, Nethack, Angband, etc.) will do, but I've personally played Nethack that's why I'm mentioning it. Warning: extremely difficult.
* LiEat: a trilogy of small JRPGs. I don't know much about them aside from the fact that they are also on Steam but are basically donationware by being on Steam and also freely downloadable.
* Syobon Action: 2D troll platformer. often called "Cat Mario". predecessor of Eryi's Action here on Steam.
On GOG: any of these: https://www.gog.com/games?price=free&sort=popularity&page=1
There's a bunch of demos and non-game stuff mixed in here but one that I can definitely recommend (and is an actual game) is Treasure Adventure Game. Looks simple but is surprisingly big and surprisingly good. It's another 2D metroidvania (I like this kind of game; maybe you can tell, haha). (Also one of only two free GOG things I've played, so I don't know much about the rest of the catalogue here.)

I also recommend Disgaea
Operation Babyl and Abyss are on sale, has anyone checked these out?
A few of you mentioned Disgaea, would you recommend starting on the first one or does it not really matter?
Phantom Brave is also on the list and I think was mentioned. The customization seems pretty nifty. How is it?
I haven't played any other Disgaea games (except for the spin offs) but from what I've seen the gameplay is much better in the later games. The plot of previous games did not interfere with my ability to enjoy the plot.
