Anyone not understand the appeal of FPS games?
I'll never understand the popularity they get. Why's shooting people in the head so mainstream?

Well the question is still an interesting one. Like, why do people find that something fun? As opposed to just stopping there and calling it a day.
It's not really interesting unless you are having a 1 to 1 with someone, as the answer is 100% subjective. Personal preference. And the answers always end up in a list of traits they like with the answer being "Because I do", which is the only real answer to the question OP ask.

It WOULD have been a good question if OP had ask what genre of game do you like, and why?
Well, maybe it's not interesting by your personal preference, but it's interesting by mine. :P

Also, the way you're wording the question would lead to people each discussing why they like different genres. OP may have wanted a thread where people are only discussing one genre.

At least, if I made the thread, I'd want to see themes leading to that same preference that tend to show up more often among multiple people.

I was playing Battlefield 1 as a support earlier today, just laying on the ground suppressing some targets, then an enemy tank rolls up out of nowhere right next to me, so I pull out my repair wrench and start smacking the tank that was about to explode and with two lethal smacks of my wrench the tank exploded and sent me flying away.

As you can tell, it's the great sacrifices I make and the laughs I can get from playing.

In my case it's not so much about the killing aspect, it's about the skill, teamwork and such that goes into the game, that can't really be done in many other genres.

There's nothing quite like the feeling of outsmarting a large group of enemies, and taking them out one by one because they made the mistake of not watching their backs, or turning a gunfight around with either fast reflexes and good aim, or smart use of cover and tactics.

Games like Squad are awesome for the almost role play way it tends to be played, realistic comms, and combat that makes you feel like you're in a real war zone.

I don't get why people like farming games or "work simulators".

Everyone has their own tastes. I quite enjoy FPSes because well...I enjoy them.

People enjoy the FPS genre for different reasons. In general, I think most people like them because they usually have really good gameplay, easy to learn and difficult to master.

I personally favour shooters that have a focus on movement and more fast paced gunplay, but that really only takes me so far when it comes to me enjoying a shooter. Level design, weapon design and enemy design are huge factors for how much I enjoy any combat focused game (not just FPS games).

It's not the killing that's the attraction, at least not for me, it's outwitting your opponent using various tactics, the environment around you, the teamplay if it's coop, etc.
Same. Also pulling off a perfect head shot from 300 m with gravity, wind, etc enabled.

Platformers use to be the main genre of gaming back in the early 90s, but we still had shooters. Like Contra, it was just from a 2d perspective. I dont like the idea of shooting people, but I do like some of the gameplay mechanics in online games like modern warfare, the duck and cover skill of the combat can be quite fun like a roller coaster. Personally speaking I dont like over the top fighting games like mortal kombat viscerally ripping apart men and women in very disgusting ways, shooting someone from a distance and watching them fall down is far less violent.

For me, its all about the speed and movement.

Games like Team Fortress, Quake, Lawbreakers, Doom, etc get me hyped more than most other games.

ESPECIALLY when they have vertical movement. That just makes it all the more fun

I really like playing healer in WoW Battlegrounds, so I guess I understand some of the appeal of repetitive PvP type games, and I guess I would get more out of them (FPS) if they offered more choices in play styles.

Why I liked Cod3 more than MW2 Paradox, cuz you had different soldier types all with different play styles and fucntions.

Depends on the FPS.. if its a singleplayer storyline linear type of thing i love it, if its multiplayer yeah i don't get that either...

Yeah like in BF4 I liked to play as an Engineer, best fun was on a good heli crew. Overwatch has a range of characters, and TF2, but not really my thing. I just got so bored of the same old FPS type MP with little innovation or development, and was let down by BF1 lack of bolt action focus. I'm sure the genre can be more than it is currently, to provide a MP experience more people could enjoy. Maybe some day they'll get it right. I'm kinda looking forward to the new Battlefront II, at least to try the different character playstyles, even though it seems spoiled by lootboxes from initial reports. I'm not gonna judge until it's released.
