Messaggio originale di Mr. "Misfortune" Teller:
Question: Why does most i5 cores can't be OC'ed?
Because intel wants you to pay more if you want to overclock, only K series can be overclocked, but then you also need a motherboard with Z chipset to be able to do it and a decent cooler. So you pay around 100$ more, but you get better performance and it will last longer, it will handle strong gpus better. But if you want to play games at 1080p/60 fps or even 1440p/60, K cpu is not needed in most cases (ofc i'm talking about current intel cpu 7xxx series). If you have a gsync/freesync monitor and don't use vsync, meaning you want the highest fps possible, then overclockable cpu should be heavily considered.

Kargor, can you give me some more details about your system / setup as my CM690iii even with Noctua S12A fans and a AiO watercooler is just too loud and I'm thinking of a new build with an AiO CPU and AiO GPU cooler in an R5 and I'd love to know more about what fans you use, case config, GPU & cooler etc, etc.

Thanks

Best way to reduce noise is, oddly enough, to mount a gigantic air-cooler.

I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but super-heavyweight air coolers like the Noctua NH-D15 and Be Quiet! Dark Rock Pro 3 are some of the most silent on the market. Their enormous heatsink surface area and slow-spinning fans makes them extremely quiet, much quieter than typical AIO liquid coolers.

The issue with AIOs is the pump used. Most of them have cheap little pumps putting out 35+ decibels at idle. Not ideal. You can get much quieter AIO systems, but expect to pay a fortune. EK's supremacy kit is the king of the AIO solutions, but it's well over $150.

Thanks for the post Wolfie,

My CPU currently is cooled by a Corsair H100i GTX with two gentle typhoon 1850RPM fans fitted with 7mm decouplers and on balanced setting this is barely audible and keeps my i7 6700 below 50c under full load.

My problem is my GPU, a Zotac 980 Ti AMP Extreme which gets rather toasty. I've swapped my CM690iii window panel for one with a fan mount (couldn't get the CM690iii fan side panel and think the one I have is from the CM Enforcer) and even with an S12A blowing in from the side and using MSI Afterburner to tinker with fan speeds I am sadly unable to keep the card cool and keep the noise in check.

If you don't use the 3rd set the two 500GB's in Raid 0 to get one large faster drive.

I was just looking to buy a new gaming PC towards the end of the year, and I wanted to see what the community is using.

I might be able to help with that, what sort of budget and performance targets were you thinking of?

My specs;
CPU: Intel i7 6700K. Overclocked to 4.6 GHz.
CPU Cooler: Phanteks PH-TC12DX
Motherboard: MSI Z170A Gaming M7
GPU: Single Asus GTX1080 Strix OC. Aftermarket overclocked, aftermarket software.
RAM: 16GB COrsair Vengeance LPX @ 2400 MHz

I was looking for something that can run games like Overwatch at minimum 60fps 1440p. A pc that could also run AAA titles such as The Witcher 3 at 40fps or more. My budget for the PC itself is around $3000 AUD.

I will list you 3 idea builds, the rest you'll have to decide if you wanted to change the parts in the list, to something you like for looks, or because you're a fan of a brand, make sure to post back, so you won't end up getting bad parts, such as PSU, cooler, and/or etc...

Intel = Higher FPS in games.
Ryzen = Better multitasking.

Ryzen build. $1856.70
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/DRJZpb

Intel build. $2004.70
https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/fJ8vr7

Intel build. $unknow
Same as the intel build above, just that the new Intel coffeelake is supposedly coming out in a month just replace the CPU with i7 8700k, and the motherboard with a Z370. The i7 8700k has 6 cores, and 12 threads, it's like having both of best worlds benefits.
i5-6600k overclocked to 4.5ghz (with liquid cooler, can never remember the name)
GTX 1070 8GB

Can't remember PSU or Mobo (I'm not home right now)
I don't know my gaming computer stuff
all I know is I am a steelseries fan boy
