What's the worst story you've ever seen in a video game?
Title says all. Discuss!

For me, it has to be Xenoblade Chronicles X. As if the terrible world-balancing and bullcrap mechanics weren't enough, the story had to be utterly terrible as well! Seriously, the cast was forgettable, the villain was one-dimensional, and the game's painfully-cliched narrative only drives home how much of a disappointment this game was. Was expecting a great "taming the frontier" kind of story, only got frustration and pain in turn.

COD 2012-now spring to mind when thinking about downright ludicrous stories.
Yeah, and they were so cliched too. The black best friend dies in Infinite Warfare's ending? ♥♥♥♥♥♥' really?!
The First Templar it was just boring and nothing too big about it
Overall the game was fun in coop tho!

Off the top of my head? Final Fantasy XIII I guess. Square Enix is pretty awful at storytelling these days. Everything is weirdly disjointed, massively underdeveloped (if at all), and horribly paced. Really sad tbh.
I thought it was alright. Nothing special, but not too bad. Only character that I actually really liked was Sazh, but let's be honest, who doesn't like him?

Lightning is basically a female version of Cloud, Hope is a mistake, Fang was.... forgettable, Vanille was not that horrible with Japanese voice, and Snow.... Eh, at least his theme song kicks ass.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 however haves much worse story with.... Time travel....

Xenoblade X's gameplay was fantastic, but the story was pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

It doesn't look as bad as Xenoblade 2 though...

You know my opinion on Fates (Currently replaying it now, and my opinion still stands), so I don't want to devolve this into yet another flamewar.

With that being said, probably Quest 64. "Oh no our orb that runs our entire economy has been stolen! Please fetch it for us!" "Oh, that orb we wanted back because it's our entire livelihood? You can have it. Good luck on your journey!"

"Dust: an elysian tail" or some something like that.
That's just some super generic animu/furry trash story - which is sad, because gameplay-wise the game is decent.

Lightning could be replaced with a cardboard cutout and have the same effect.
Fair point, but she did improve a little bit as the story progressed (remember that part when she hugged a mista- I mean, Hope? Or when she shed a tear behind Snow? Or when she actually smiled in the ending?). I don't understand the reason why she's so popular, but she's far from being a bad character, at least for me. I didn't like her that much, but I never had a problem with her.

the witcher is basically a japanese visual novel packed into an edgy western theme

The books are considered "Polish Classics" from what I've seen on Wikipedia, so I guess the games are different.

Another bad one is Fantasy Life.

Nah, I respect your opinion on Fates. I just get pretty annoyed not when people dislike it, but when they insult the people who DO defend it. To me, that kind of behavior is indefensible; even if you disagree with someone over his opinion, that doesn't give you the right to be a disrespectful ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ about it. It's why I got on edge, truth be told.

We're on agreement over Xenoblade X, though! Lol

Xenoblade X is my favorite aRPG gameplay-wise. I sunk 200 hours into it and even 100%'d the game because of how much I loved the gameplay. The world was great (minus NLA) and the combat was perfect, but the story was laughable at best. The story is even worse when you consider how good Xenoblade 1's story was.

Funny thing is that I don't like Xenoblade X's gameplay. The combat's fun, don't get me wrong, but plenty of archaic formulae completely wrecked the experience for me - some parts of the map being inexcusably high-leveled in a game advertised for you to go anywhere you want, the complete inability to opt out of affinity quests, the inability to bring whatever party members you want with you... I really could go on, but I think I won't be able to speak justice on how much I was disappointed with the gameplay and mechanics. The terrible story only made things worse.

Say what you will about Fates' story, at least the gameplay's some of the best the series has ever seen.

You could choose what people you wanted in your party so long as it wasn't a story mission. I agree with the affinity parts, but the extreme imbalance of enemies is basically a staple of the Xenoblade franchise.

It's done to keep you on your toes and make the overworld more interesting.

I don't think you'll believe me, but the enemies in XCX were more balanced than the ones in the original.

If you think the enemy placement was terrifying in XCX, look up the "Mischevious Nabierus"

Yeah, but that's the problem: Xenoblade Chronicles gets away with it because it's a pretty damn linear game. Yes, there were OPAF enemy encounters, but they were similar to FOEs in Etrian Odyssey; this worked because of course there's always another fish, and your best bet was to avoid it.

In Xenoblade Chronicles X, it just doesn't work. The game's far more open world than Xenoblade Chronicles was, but it commits the massive sin of making entire sections of the map be a Lv. 40 - 50 indigenous ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, and if you wanted to explore, you're going to have to play the world's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Metal Gear Solid game. Unto itself, for a game all about exploring as far as you can see, the fact that the game doesn't even do that is something I find inexcusable on the developers' part. For Christ's sake at LEAST make it so that the areas of the world scale to your level, but nope, my exploration is interrupted by an indigen spelling "TPK" for me and my team.

Again, I respect your opinion, man.

I never had much of a problem with enemies blocking me off from areas (minus Sylvallum), but then again I knew the "secret" "meta" grinding trick and I got to level 60 very quickly.

I think it's fine to have a mix of enemy levels, but a system that would make only enemies near your level or lower able to detect and chase you down would have been nice.
