Early to mid '80s is the beginning of the millennials. They used to be called Generation Y, following on after Gen X. Gen Z begins mid to late '90s to an undefined period so far.
Generation Z. Or if you prefer Post-Millennials, Centennials, or the iGeneration.
Generation X is the kids of the boomers. Starting in the mid '60s and lasting until the late '70s, pushing it to an overlap with the millennials at around '77-'83 depending on which organization you want to look at's demographic numbers.
You can believe what you want, but you'd be wrong.
Gen X is usually 1965 - 1977
There's usually an overlap between X&Y between '77 & '83. Coinciding with the release of the first and last of the original Star Wars trilogy. Some even consider it a separate generational buffer that shares traits from both GenX and GenY.
Gen Y is usually 1983 - 1994 although sometimes pushed later.
Gen Z is usually 1995 - undefined since they haven't decided how the 2005 cohort will identify.
There are some that will push the Gen Z start to between '99 and '01, though.
1965 is too early
As stated, I am gen x I should know,, unless Im an overlap....
'65 is not even remotely too early. Some even start it earlier since the first boomers were already having kids by 1960.
If one or both of your parents were born in Generation Jones (1957-1965 - which is sometimes considered its own generational cohort, sometimes just the tail end of the boomers), and born in '83 or later, you're not GenX.
Nah but jokes aside, just for perspective:
"The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers."
~ Socrates (469–399 B.C.)
People have always complained, and they will always complain, about the new generations. It might seem extra bad because we're exposed to them now through the internet, but in the end they'll end up like us, complaining about the new generation in their time.
