Some clearly do.
When I was 12, there was this one really popular, but shy boy who wore multiple wristbands on a daily basis. Barely said a word, yet all the ladies where after him and thought he was so cute, etc.
It wasn't until later I ask him why he wore so many wristbands. Same deal. It was a hint of his interests. It was crazy but in a twisted hidden way worked to attract the same interest.
It's not a new trend.
