Why do girls wear chokers?

We kids when at school went through a fad of wearing wrist bands. It was pretty much the same deal (except for boys too), certain ones/colors meant something secretly to the opposite (or same) sex for what you are into. Most young boys wore "Breast Cancer Awareness" > "I love Boobies" as a daily thing.

But seeing young teens wearing chokers just make me cringe.
