how to upgrade an i5 2400 to a more recent cpu?
so say i have a motherboard with an LGA1155 cpu socket and i want to move to a newer cpu without having to replace the ddr3 ram and the gtx and the sata hdd as well is this possible

nevertheless, if the BIOS is updated, you can get 3rd gen intel core cpu upgrade.

or you can do an overhaul upgrade (all new pc components): latest 7th gen intel core vs amd ryzen

Yes, you can just swap it with another CPU as long as it's LGA1155 compatible. Here's is a list of CPU's that are compatible.

so i just need to update the bios to get a better gen cpu?

yes, 3rd gen intel core cpu use the same socket as 2nd gen intel core.
that bios update is a prerequisite so that the motherboard can recognize 'newer' 3rd gen cpu.

up to 3rd gen intel core cpu only.
