Sadly I do not have a group of friends ether. I am more of a lone adventure guy.
Japan would be the obvious choice for most and myself if you're asking which country I would prefer to live in. It's a liberal democratic society, more advanced and developed, more educated population, and far more proseperous per capita. There are serious problems China faces such as pollution, domestic unrest and economic instability in the future. And also possible wars given its recent expansions and uneasy relationships with pretty much all of its neighbours.
But of course I wouldn't move to either of these countries since I love the one I'm living in right now, and IMO it's far better than either Japan or China.
And Japan, for the same reasons as above, is obviously a "better" country than China today. But if you're asking which country is better, like overall and throughout history, we have to take into account things that won't necessarily have a direct impact on the living standard such as culture + history, world impact etc. Although in theory no country should be seen as "better" than another, objectively China should beat easily Japan. It was far more important to world history than Japan, and indeed most nations in the world. It was also objectively far more powerful than Japan throughout most of history, with the role only being reversed in the last 100 years or so. It's also important to note that Japan was heavily influenced by China culturally and it's fair to say that Japan wouldn't be at all the same today had China not existed. But China would still be the same up to the late 19th cen when Japan started influencing China instead if Japan did not exist.
So yeah, if your question is which country is better overall, then my answer would go to China.
Maybe took your question waaay too seriously and acamedically given the other answers that were posted. But hey, I need to convince myself that I did not completely waste 3 years in history, politics and East Asian studies in undergrad...
They are lying. I bet the chinese authorities are lying about this. No way the suicide rate in China is that low.
But I am surprised that Japan isn't higher on the listing.....As suicide is a subject treated differently in Japan. Don't wanna say that it "has tradition" there... But hell... there's a forest in Japan where people go to hang themselves.
As for China's rank, it's indeed very likely that Chinese authority lied about the rank as they care so much about foreign perception (but not as much about ACTUALLY IMPROVING things like combating suicide rate). But again I don't know how the research was conducted, maybe it was done by WHO staffs themselves? Also note the country has the biggest population in the world. So even if a STAGGERING number of people commit suicide each year, on a percentage it may not be that much for China...
Japan has extremely strict social behaviours.
Japan = women.
None of us are virgin on this forum!
Yeah... but I can't imagine this being a thing in modern Japan tho. Maybe in veeeeeeeeeeeery old fashioned families... somewhere away from the big cities.
I am more interested in the "modern" reasons for suicide in Japan....
"In 2014 on average 70 Japanese people committed suicide every day, "
"Nearly 2,000 high school students have committed suicide as a result of bullying.[19] The statistics for the year 2014 showed for the first time that suicide was the most common cause of death among those aged 10 to 19.[20][21]"
-wikipedia
That's immense...
If a game developer is sacked in Japan, it's said that he won't ever find another job in development.
This kind of social pressure is sure to cause a lot more suicides.
but then in the longrun I guess it's the better choice, since with far more population and potential, it definitely "should" stay far ahead of Japan if properly governed. But whether this "would" happen is up to anyone's guess.
