any games like advance wars on steam?
NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH ADVANCE WARFARE

if you don't know, their was a special game series called advance wars, 4 of whom were released in the states going from 1, 2 (GBA), dual wars and the most Controversial of the bunch, Days of Ruin (it has a different name in EU)

i like all of them but ever since beating all 4, i haven't a game as simple, yet complex as this set of games and Intelligent sytems (the devs) keep pumping out FE games, which im not as fond of (i personally don't like the JRPG elements)

so if their was any similar games that i could try, that would be great

also the OST of all the games are great, but this is my favorite https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vH5-H3_5ISY&index=2&list=PL97243E9FEC95D35F

Hyperdevotion Noire would be the closes thing to the Nintendo Wars games. Though I'm not too sure, I'm also a fan of the series, so I would like to know if there are some more games like it in Steam too.

While not sold on Steam, there was that old game called Gadget Trial[www.kogado.com].
You can download the demo version from their website, and I know there is a fan English translation for the full version, too.
To be frank though, gameplay-wise it was fairly tedious.
And no, it's not porn.

its more FE then advance wars, which isn't what im looking for

the thing i like about advance wars was the direct focus of commanding and building an army without worrying about dozens of resources or losing everything in a blink like in most RTS's

advance wars is anything but tedious, literally half the fun was easy nature of doing things, while the other half was the diffuculty of overcoming overwhleming obstalces

Nvm, this is the legit spiritual successor.. It's called Wargroove, just found it.

Hell its even coming to the Nintendo Switch as well as PC. Developed by one of my favorite companies, Chucklefish who make amazing games with beautiful pixel art.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/294860/Valkyria_Chronicles/

The game play is different, but it is still a turn based strategy game and has a similar feel to Advance Wars.

Also, thanks for the 11 month necro.

the medevil art style really doesn't sit well with me, call it a dumb complaint but its the most underwhelming and overused theme so seeing it is a big turn off

http://www.tinymetal.com/

this is more akin to AW so i might pick it up

i played this but it really doesn't feel like AW and the RNG in this game is much worse especially with "less accurate weapons" which can be the difference between winning and losing easily where as even if you get a bad RNG, its normally only +- 1 and it won't tumble into a defeat on one bad step (for the most part)

i have yet to pick it back up, i should just watch a walkthrough but im piss how in the first encounter with the relic thing, she deletes your whole team from across the map and since i didn't realize that was going to happen, i didn't save so i have to do the WHOLE thing again which im still pissed about after like a year, that alone was such a huge turn off for me; i don't even remember how to play the game much and that sour taste really hasn't left so i can't say i can enjoy it

The closest thing I ever found on Steam was http://store.steampowered.com/app/46440/Future_Wars/

It gets bad reviews but its not a bad game. I think if you liked Advanced Wars as much as I did then you will enjoy Future Wars.

That's some deep red in those reviews. It'd be a gamble.

Sorry for being so late to the discussion, but I happen to just come across it. I was referred to Future Wars several years ago, pre-2011, in some forums, and to be honest I quite enjoy the game. I know there are a lot of negative reviews, some of which are valid, some of which I considered to be incorrect. I am not sure that the current $5 asking price is much of a gamble though, but in regards to Future Wars, what I would suggest, is if there is something about Advance Wars that really stands out for you, something that if an imitator got wrong would be a deal breaker for you, then read those Steam reviews, and if something negative is said about that particular thing, more than once, then skip on the purchase. I, personally, have never understood the hatred spewed towards that game. I is clearly trying to mimic AW, and in my opinion does a fairly good job at capturing the feel of the AW games anyhow.

Another game that has released since this thread was started is Tiny Metal, and another one I have enjoyed. It, oddly enough, also seems to get a little more negativity than I believe is fare, but it is nowhere near the FW levels of vitriol.

That Wargroove game looks very exciting, and having never heard of it before reading this thread, I am now following their blog. I hope it releases soon, as I will grab it on both the PC and the Switch.

Hope I was able to contribute something of value to the conversation!!

yeah, im on the Tiny Metal discord, great bunch of people, i did my own review of the game (there was a little bit i could update, but i never got around to it)

they're working quite hard on the multiplayer update, which will also fix other bugs as well in the same patch/update

i'll just bide my time i guess until then, i really like a good turn based strategy game in general, RTS are too fast for me

Look forward to that Tiny Metal patch, for sure.

I agree with you on the speed of RTS. While I own numerous, and have even beaten a few, I still prefer the pace of turn-based, thinking things through, and I have always hated feeling rushed in games. I love strategy games in general, although not very good at them yet, but turn-based really hits the sweet spot for me. Funny but true, I have been playing video games since they first started showing up in the mall in the 70's, but never really got into strategy games until Advance Wars. Those games really opened my eyes to a whole new genre, one that I just never seemed interested in before them. It is funny, as I have recently begun playing a few other genres that were previously outside of my library, and have found that being closed minded and stuck in my old ways has really caused me to miss some wonderful games, a mistake that I am currently trying to rectify.
