Why are some people so obsessed with fashion?
I don't even wear anything other than T-shirts and jeans, even during winter.. usually just put a coat on. Why, then, do people spend money on expensive clothes? It's just a money drain.

At least you can play your games instead of walking around carrying them on your back expecting people to be impressed

Conspicuous consumption, manipulative advertising, social pressure to be rampantly consumerist, lots of reasons.

Suppose so. I'd rather compulsively spend money on tools than clothes

I use myself as an example, I couldn't wear same type of clothes every day, it would be too boring, like playing only one game forever. I see palying games and fashion as a hobbies, and most of hobbies anyway are costly.

Vanity is a thing.

The only time I spend a bit more is when I buy shoes, but even then they're not branded shoes and they never go beyond the 50€ mark. When I buy shoes, I expect them to last a very long time.

The last time I bought mine was in 2010. They're still going strong.

It's a mutibillion dolalr industry that has existed for a very, very long time.
It is perfectly suited for and early adopt the consumerist regime and is supported not only by the marketing strategies of that culture, but by the inherent biological compulsion for association and identification .

What you wear expresses certain elements that (intentional or otherwise) contribute to certain prejudice and presumptions. This may be as 'harmless' as suggesting you are particular to a genre of music to support a particular political aspiration etc.

People always search for some kind of....identity. And most people's identity consists of being well dressed.
I am more with OP there.... Tshirts and jeans are enough. I identify through other things.

Some people even have more self esteem when wearing fancy dresses. idk... to me.. suddenly having to wear fancy stuff would make me feel insecure.

and the person can't buy expensive clothes because she likes? maybe she doesn't want to "impress" anyone , perhaps she thought the clothes beautiful and she bought because of it.

Some people are required to maintain a certain standard in appearance for their position.

Wóuld you contract to purchase nuclear technology from a man with a long shaggy beard, piss-stained, moth-eaten overcoat and no shoes?

That's fine but some people do obsess over fashion.

We are equal because expensive clothes are equivalent to triple A games.
Except games gives you enjoyment, but clothes don't. (Only merely for face value, in Asian culture)

There is a difference between being presentable and obsessing over fashion.
