Why Funko Pop toys?

I don't understand why these things are so successful. Are guys really buying these because they're "cute" or what? Are women the ones buying them up or are guys buying them for their significant others or daughters, etc?

What happened to making lifelike, bad-a-s-s replica models of characters? It's hard to find high quality figures these days, but you see these "cute" things all over the place that take craps on the characters, for the sake of "cuteness" and people lap it up like it's the greatest toy ever made.

Are people buying these for their small children, for the sake of collecting and completing sets or legitimately because they love these things?

Personally, I would never want to see my favorite characters being sold as "cute" little figures with enormous squared heads and usually no mouth. The only character that these things portray well is the old man from the movie Up.

Actually, its fun to note that Funko killed the actual vinyl figure industry. In the 90s and 2000s, a lot of Japanese, Korean, and American companies made vinyl figures of varying types and qualities, ranging from intricate and detailed figures of movie or game characters down to highly stylized keychains or desk accessories. Either way, there were tons of companies in this business and they all took it seriously up unil Funko showed up. They produced the Pop figures incredibly quickly and cheaply, since most of them just got a coat of paint, and they then branched out into other types. Now, you can get the squarish Pop figures, detailed Funko Legacy figures, another "we just took a shape and painted it" line called Dorbs, some line of figures right in the middle, tiny variants of all of these, posters of these, cups with them, keychains, blind bags... The actual companies that made vinyl figures could not compete with Funko and their 27 different brands and hundreds of new figures being mass produced every second of the day, and as a result most of those brands went under, got bought, or don't make figures anymore. Really, Figma is the last of these old companies still doing what they're doing, mostly because they have a niche that nobody's really cut into successfully yet.

They are popular because
1. they dont cost an arm and a leg (an iron man statue can cost an upwards of $110 depending on realisim)
2. they are collectable. People like to collect things and its fun to be able to have a bunch of characters from your fave game
3. they look good on your shelf with other statues
4. they are kinda cute
5. there ment to be bobbbble heads not accurate replicas

This pretty much sums it up, although not all Funco Pop toys are bobbleheads.

I am with op there.
These things are ugly. They aren't even cute (by my personal definition of the word).
Funko pop is low quality trash imo.
I mean... don't get me wrong... I don't "hate " people who buy them. But I will always prefer high quality 1:1 (look wise) sculptures to.... this funko pop trash.

The only positive thing I see about them, is that they are affordable... while for actual statues of our fav franchise we usually pay around 100$ or more.

The success is propably explained by the numerous licenses they acquire. Which has to be quite an investment.
