So you want donations taxable..? Nice thinking, and what a great evolution of what was charity...! Is that sarcasm?
I dont see anything wrong with having a paypal/patreon link IF someone wants to support what you are doing. I dont agree however with basically shove into your viewers face non-stop and begging for cash (*cough* DSP *cough´).
I think the keyword here is giving people the OPTION to donate if they want to. If you dont like it then tough luck, the world aint gonna suddenly change to fit your demand.
To put into perspective: theres a difference between people uploading lazy raw gameplay or whatever footage and expecting to get paid for it and between people spending HOURS and a lot of their revenue to buy equipment and upgrade it for the best quality content possible.
In itself is indeed isnt and this is something all those wannabe startout youtubers need to realise: 99°% percent of video makers will never reach even near the income Pewdiepie can for instance aka basically earning enough cash to not have to work for the rest of your life.
It cannot be said enough times that you should ALWAYS have a main job or any other income revenue beside youtube, unless you want to end up in the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ if one day the youtube bubble will burst. And it will eventually.
Well, no, I don't think anyone is saying that charitable donations should be taxed. We are merely differing on what is or is not charity. Giving to charity, totally tax exempt. Youtube isn't a charity, nor is twitch. What is merely called a "donation" for sugar coating purposes is really a gratuity for entertainment satisfaction.
It's in poor taste to ask for gratuity for youself (I did this thing, please give me money). It's perfectly accept to fundraise for a 501(c) organization (and even those need to file a Form 990).
However I will somewhat empathize and agree with one point made. All the incessant begging for money and the shoehorned ads for lootcrate, blue apron, etc, from nearly every established Youtube channel has made me sick. I'm of couse not sickened that the content creators are trying to further their channel, but the sheer repetition of it. It's not enough that Youtube has ads playing on every video before it plays, but then the video has all sorts of sponsers and then you're asked to support a Patreon. It's as bad as watching standard television now.
It's the ones that give them money that you should worry about.
False idiology...
Well, depend what topic we're about.. nvm
Allow me to rephrase...
People will do what they want.
People will do what they want, even if it's not smart.
Part of freedom is the freedom to ruin yourself.
Is it annoying logging on to Steam to see people begging? Yes it is, but YouTube ads are also annoying, and no ones going to remove them.
I'm completely against the taxing idea. If someone is lucky enough to make that much money of YouTube then I don't see the point in trying to screw them over.
Not sure where the sociopathic ideals thing is coming from.
Now everyone think the first thing they should do when streaming first time, is to install donation plugin.
At least with patreon they deserve money, making art is much harder than playing CSGO or Dota 2, and they dont annoy people about donating in broadcast, it's always link outside of video and it dont show money bar. They often do rewards for people who donated (comission art, etc)
