For a subject like this, I'd slap http://store.steampowered.com/app/215280/ on the table.

For one thing, it's a modern-day alternate-reality horror themed MMORPG. It has great storytelling in the game. and while not all the questlines are the same, there are reviews stating that some are more disturbing than what you can find in "real" horror games. Others are more action-themed.

"Multiplayer", at least for the story content (which is a HUGE chunk of the game), may be limited to some extent. For one thing, I don't think you can really take a large group onto a quest, as these quests are balanced for solo play. Two players, maybe even three, but that should be about it. Also, they might have a solo instance at some point, which every participant will have to complete on their own (although you can, of course, help each other on the puzzle-solving parts, or by warning the others if you're the first to encounter some tough-ish enemy).

Duungeons, to my knowledge, are meant for 5 players. Don't know about lairs.

They have some kind of "relaunch" coming up in probably the next few days; don't know whether that's going to improve the game even further, or destroy it.

Yeah I was curious about the game, but never followed it up, I might wait for the relaunch, but it seemed pretty good, problem is I'm not a huge MMO person, I hate it when numbers dictate my effectiveness as opposed to me

Didn't Deceit just release? It's a multiplayer horror game. Dead by Daylight is good, Dead Realm. Those are like the only multiplayer horror games I know of. If you mean co-op as well, then theres a bunch of those.

I was looking at Dead By Daylight, but I'm a bit more interested in the upcoming Friday The 13th Game, and I also think Last year is coming up soon, which ironically predates both former games I just mentioned

Well, better weapons always do more damage, That's a very common theme in games.

Other than that, don't expect the numbers to do the work for you. Not having classes and levels (in the usual sense, anyway) means that you always have to pay attention. A "late game" player may opt to ignore many attacks in early newbee areas, but that will only work for early areas. Later on, stuff will get more dangerous even for players returning for a relaxing holiday trip.

In "on level" areas, your numbers will merely allow you to accomplish anything at all. You'll still have to apply them properly -- which means running around to avoid area damage, watching enemy abilities, and juggling your situational abilities and their cooldowns to make sure you're still buzzing around when everything else is not.

On some quests, your numbers will mean nothing since you don't have to fight anything, or not much. On some quests, you'll have to be dead to accomplish anything, and your numbers don't apply when you're dead (actually, I tend to have very low numbers on these (very few) quests -- I like to take off all my gear before intentionally dying, to avoid repair costs).
