Nvidia Shadowplay Red Line [List of solutions!]
It seems like the new GeForce Experience model has fixed this issue.

The issue is back as of 19.8.2017

Shadowplay is working for me as of 2.7.2018!
Great job Nvidia! It only took you 2 years :-D


Re-installing the driver should fix it (update 16.04.2020)
(GeForce version 3.20.3.63)

I've collected all the possible ways to fix this I could find on the internet, so looking from somewhere else will probably lead to the same tricks scattered across threads and websites.

Here are ways I tried to fix this, they haven't worked for me but might work for you.
Trying these out, from top to bottom of the list is the best way to go!

  • Make sure you have the requirements for Shadowplay.
    (https://www.geforce.com/geforce-experience/system-requirements)

  • Make sure you have enough free space on your disk.
  • Make sure your drivers are up to date.

  • Make sure your games are on fullscreen.
    (Having them on windowed fullscreen or windowed might cause the problem!)

  • Turn Shadowplay off and on.
    (You might want to do this after each following step!)

  • Allow desktop capture.
  • Change your save folder location.
  • Change your capture hotkeys.

  • Re-install GeForce Experience.
  • Installing an older Graphics Driver.
  • Restart the Nvidia streamer service via "Services".
  • Restarting Nvidia Container
    (Task manager > More details > Services tab > search for NvContainerLocalSystem > Right click > Restart.)

  • Installing windows 10 media pack N and NK.
  • Creating a second windows user account with admin rights.

  • Using the clean install option, when updating Drivers in GeForce Experience.
  • Use DDU to uninstall your graphics drivers.

  • If you have RTSS, set its global application level to none.

More Possible solutions, but very unlikely to fix it;
  • Installing windows 10 again.
  • Install older version of GeForce Experience.
  • Installing GeForce Experience beta. (more info below)
  • Changing status indicator/fps/camera location and size.
  • Changing microphone from Always on to Push-to-talk.
Things I have not tried;
  • Installing Windows 7/8 (not going to try)

If you have found a solution, please share it with everyone else.

If you have any suggestions, I'm open for trying them out.

I'll keep updating this list until a way to fix this has been found.

Have had this issue for 10 months now... originally gave up but I have tried pretty much everything. Last hope was to use DDU and reset all video drivers but it didn't work and still just has the red cross :/
Subscribing for future needs lol.
The red line/press record and nothing happens issue seems linked to your windows user account. I had this issue. Created a second windows user account with admin rights. Logged into that second account and Instant Replay works properly. Anyone have any ideas how to fix the original windows user account though?

Are you still having this problem? The new GFE fixed it for me many months ago.

OMG I fixed it. For everyone that still has this problem, with me it was RTSS that caused the problems. I really hate that program damn. RTSS only causes problems for me but it is necessary with MSI afterburner. But as soon as I set the global application level in RTSS to none, it was fixed. Can finally record again!

Yours is the only thing that fixed it for me. I have no idea why this suddenly decided to be an issue but it worked. I've been using Afterburner with RTSS for over 2 years and never had any issues with Shadowplay until I recently updated Windows 10.

hi, what the RTSS? i have same problem with Shadowplay i can't using " Instant Replay " i getting red line

It comes with MSI Afterburner.

task manager > more details (if u haven't already) > services tab > search for NvContainerLocalSystem > right click > restart. Hope it helps.
I would like to suggest one more solution for users of Nvidia Experience v2.11.4.0 (old version, without performance issues).
Just spent a few hours, trying to make it work (getting red like after one recording no matter what), but the reason was so obvious - GF Experience 2.11 is not working properly with NVidia Driver 391.01
Installed 385.41 driver version and shadowplay working like a charm :steamfacepalm:

10/28/18. It seems Nvidia likes to break the shadowplay functionality randomly.

That said, yesterday I "upgraded" to the newest Nvidia driver 416.34 and lost Shadowplay functionality. I had the red slash through the icon.

I searched the Nvidia website for the previous driver, 411.70, downloaded, ran it from the download directory, chose "custome install", selected a "clean install", it installed itself successfully. Now, I have Shadowplay functionality back.

I'm running win 8.1 64bit, on a laptop with a GTX 980m and all the current windows updates.

I've noticed that Windows updates and Geforce Experience/Shadowplay don't always play nice with each other. That said, in this case I didn't check if shadowplay was working after updating Widows files, which I also did. Either way, in this case, as of this date, 411.70 and its version of Geforece Experience have Shadowplay working.

Also, the original version of the Geforce Experience software was MUCH more simple and intuitive to navigate when trying to switch things on/off to troubleshoot.

Thanks for the input, it seems as when they release a new series of cards they also remove the Shadowplay feature from cards that are 2 generations older. Don't know if this is intentional or not.

So for now, cards older than the 1000 or 2000 series need to have older drivers installed.

I had this problem on yesterday, directly after a driver update as suggested by NVidia Game Experience. I deinstalled experience and the driver, downloaded a fresh copied, reinstalled and the problem was gone.
