What is the difference between a clown and a jester?
Like seriously they are the same, other than maybe the way they dress.

Clowns do physical comedy. Jesters have a broader range of talents, such as singing, acrobatics, juggling, or doing magic tricks.
Clowns are used to entertain younger audiences. Jesters were mainly used to entertain older people, but they spent a lot of time working for kings and queens.

Mimes are the embodiment of Satan. Stay away from those creatures before they suck out your soul.
The fundamental difference between the two is that, while a jester makes fun of others; a clown is made fun of by others.
A Court Jester is part of a King's entourage and was essentially a household bard: serving as both entertainer and deliverer of bad news.

Clowns came much later, and are specifically part of a Harlequinade. (A group of entertainers, as apposed to the Jester who was a solo routine) Originally the clown was the foil of the "main character," the Harlequin. However, in modern times you have the "White Clown" who replaces the Harlequin and has his own foil, the Red Clown.

The Horror Clown is related to their father character type in appearance only, usually taking on the form of a "red clown" and are modern invention. They are a juxtaposition of the "fun" clown outer appearance and an evil psychotic and usually murderous temperament. Despite being exclusively a horror trope, the drastically reduced popularity of circuses, and in turn clowns, has resulted in the Horror Clown taking over, and now days is usually what people think of when they hear the word "clown."

And yes, there are organizations consisting of "non-ironic" clowns who have fought to change this attitude.

Jesters are the offspring of Clowns.
Court Jesters entertained the nobles in the mediaeval and Renaissance period, they were typically in the employ of the monarchy. Most people view Jesters juggling bowling pins and this may be true of modern Jesters but traditional Jesters were the comedians of the time, it was a respectable position to hold.

Court Jesters were well paid with large sums of money and a permanent resident in the castle. Traveling Jesters that entertained the common folk at fairs and markets received little money and lived a life of poverty.

I love street mimes. You CAN get them to speak by stepping hard (accidently of course) on their foot. Clumsiness works well too.
Clowns kill the Batman

Jester's destroy the world.
