Was Major Tom by Peter Schilling ever a hit, and if, when?

Major Tom peaked at #42 on the UK top 40 charts in 1984, and stayed on the charts for a total of 8 weeks.

Number 1 hits during its days were Duran Duran's "The Reflex", Lionel Ritchie's "Hello", Wham's "Wake Me Up Before You Go", and Frankie Goes to Hollywood's "Two Tribes".

But not in the U.S?
Afraid not, sorry. And #42 is barely worth mentioning as a hit, to be honest.

I remember this song. It was played on the radio alot when I was kid. I remember it was in the soundtrack of a couple of movies too, I think. Thanks for the reminder OP, I had forgotten this nice song.
Np, I simply heard it on a station a couple of years ago.

That's David Bowie's "Space Oddity", released in 1969. Here is the official video from 1972:

blast from the past that one,i actually thought it was pretty good, from memory it never got into Casey Kasem's Top 40 ,but it did make it on Countdown in Australia a few times,it's bit like some of Missing Persons songs,a gem that was largely unknown

Great song! Ranked third on iTunes in January, 2016 after Bowie's death.
