The question is, is it better to be feared or respected? Or both?
If you are feared, then you can get what you want easily, yes, but fear gives people hope, and hope breeds heroes.
Respect means you can also get things you want, maybe not as easily, but life will certainly be good if you're respected. However, depending on your position, people may challenge you which can make life difficult. Take MLK for example.
I do like the idea of being feared, I'll be honest, I tend to play the bad guy in video games and such because I like the idea of having that power, but being respected would probably be better for my health.

Well, you're lucky your enemy didn't have control then.
Even people I tease and joke with and sometimes even full on debate with I usually end up being on quite good terms with them. Although, I know there's a few people that don't like me, but no one that actively seeks me out to harm me, be it online or in person.
