FPS wise, I really quite like/liked a few of them from an experiential point of view, especially some older ones. DromEd, Quakes. From what they achieved with them I was sort of amazed at those, and with some: still am; in a sense. Some of these games look great, in certain regards I feel they are still relevant from perhaps a gameplay/design point of view (which I sort of have a very limited knowledge on, but know what ''works'').
I used to love the one from Duke Nukem 3D but after playing 'Quake' soon realized that what the latter one showed, and how it played was more 'convincing' than the rest and thus (subjectively) better.
Some (noteworthy) ''oldschool'' RPG 'engines' are equally amazing in the atmosphere they provide too, I think. For instance; -Playing 'Icewind Dale EE' atm, and basically that is sort of unique and immersive that I'm sort of blown away by it.. How good it is, the game experience. Other examples would be some RTS-games (game engines, that were great).
New ones are interesting and basically highly advanced perhaps hence more the reason to appreciate the old ones that in this regard ''spoke'' to me; resonating within... so to speak because of their unique design or 'ideas' behind it. (like sound design in some, for instance or the ''AI'' in others)
'Unreal' Engine' for instance, has became something so great, comprehensive that games made in or with it, are sort of, of a high quality by ''default'' IMO. I wasn't ''blown away'' by it before, like say now am after seeing what's possible with it, and how it's done. It looks good, scale is right and in this regard I feel as if there's almost no comparison with it. (perhaps some, other ''in-house'' engines come close though; which is impressive)
'Frostbite' is great, sure. During Frostbite' sort of ''introduction'' (to the public) things ''changed'' (destructible environment/''maps'') but soon afterwards that sort of went ''back to back'', and ''things'' only looked 'nicer'... but didn't have that ''oomph''.... involved.
So, when it comes to 'how things look', sort of by ''default''; I feel as if UE takes the crown (and) while there are thus obviously a few 'engines' in and between that are recent; relevant, in the way that they do things uniquely, differently as a whole I think that these are sort of ''few'' and far: ''in between'' the ''Giants'' that do set certain standards that apply all across the ''board''.
Whatever this runs on
why? because it seems to be a pattern for reasons I dont understand that most of my favorite games over the past 3 years have been made in Unity.
but the graphics?
ummmm
