That's not to say that Tim or others that are like him are arrogant, some people are just into that stuff and others aren't. It's similar to anything else really. I'm sure that there are some actors in movies that are famous and some like the attention from interviews and others hate them.
Gabe is similar to the Houser brothers (from R*) where they all let the games do the talking for them.
Gabe is a former member of Microsoft and he worked alongside Bill Gates. Gabe for the most part likes Microsoft and that's why Left 4 Dead and Counterstrike were also on Xbox 360.
Gabe was said to be highly influenced by the game "Doom" and it was a game that his friends and him would play constantly. Gabe predicted that video games would be the next popular form of entertainment after he played Doom.
Gabe is also famous for creating Valve and Steam. Steam is the biggest gaming platform for PC and it is to the PC what PSN is for the Playstation and what Xbox Live is to Xbox.
Valve has a near flawless track record and they are one of the few game developers to create award winning games one by one. Wasn't the highest rated game of all time for many years, Half Life 2, at a perfect 100 on Metacritic ?
I can understand why so many Highschool / University people like it, because Gordon Freeman is a scientist and action hero, but the game itself, didnt impress me.
But I have to say I am not the shooter genre guy, I would like if Valve produces hiqh quality simulators, like a new FSX or Train Simulator.
Neither was I.
Half Life 2 had a lot of Hype to live up to already. And that always means there will be people who don't like it. Even more so when you don't get along with the FPS genre in general. Still, at the time it was an impressive game. And the atmosphere it creates still holds up to todays standards.
Still, what gave Gabe his celebrity status wasn't valve itself or the Half Life games. It's just what happens when you create and own the single, dominating distribution plattform for any kind of media overnight.
