Is it a book series or something unaffiliated with ST?
Nope it is a seperate TV universe with one crappy TV spin off.
Try the Freespace 2 source port The Babylon Poject it's free.
like star wars
Whats good sci-fi 2001?
I somewhat dislike the sci-fi genre generally, with a few exceptions. People generally read fiction to get away from real life not closer to it. Im more a romantic type person (not romance, romanticism).

I meant how all the new alien races they meet outside of the regulars are mildly retarded, and need to have everything explained to them or even be saved from their own stupid antics by the captain and his mates. Although that could just be a media thing in general where protagonists are always right and everyone else is wrong, but it doesn't work so well in space for me. The Stargate series bothered me in the same way, only they were outright arrogant in how they dealt with alien races.
But yes, I think you're right about that they are the protagonists and thus need to inevitably prevail over others. Cause, when not, end of series. Earth humans actually failed a lot in Stargate whenever parallel dimensions were concerned (because those aren't "our" protagonists, just copycats, so we can kill and abuse them all we want; that is also why clones/copies from SG1 were not hard to kill off too).
I guess you could make a scifi series with an alien race being the lead, but would that work?
None comes to mind. I'm not sure how it was in Lexx, and I never watched Defiance, but the latter takes place on Earth I think and one male lead is a human so whatever.
What about Alien Nation or The Aliens TV series.
Alien Nation is a old TV series, but The Aliens is on E4 or was.
Perhaps, but i was thinking not of one outshining the others but a more dynamic interplay between them all to make it more realistic. The odds are much higher that we'd actually be the idiots all the older races have to tolerate, but i think i'll be optimistic today and believe we might be able to keep an equal footing with them. Although looking at how things are now it's laughable to think we'd go around as some superior species teaching other races how to do things.
