2012 - 2013 Budget Gaming Laoptop?!?
Girls and boys (gents & ladies),

I havee been thinking of investing into a new laptop or parts to build my own PC. With current financial situation I can afford no more than USD 770.00; Is there any suggestions towards part makes and models I should consider purchasing. For games coming out between now and 2013.

B3RT, do you have TV (at least HD-ready) with HDMI port? If it has good response time (12 ms or less), it can be used as monitor.

I always use laptops for gaming:) Right now I have new MSI GE60-0NC for $1000 (our Russian modification has only Core i5 instead of Core i7, but for the same price). I won't say that it runs BF3 in Ultra (it does, but with 15 FPS), but pretty good for gaming. Previously used $600-700 models, and wanted to buy one this time, but in last moment decided to add $300 more. I can say that though laptop is not as upgradable as desktop, if it's good, it can be sold after a year for about 70% of original cost. But even adding remaining 30% will give you new modern hardware.
$600-700 laptop, if carefully chosen, will run all modern games with High details, but not more. All upcoming games will run on High or Low settings, but for at least 2 or 3 years you won't see any game that you can't run at all.
I have desktop PC, regulary ugrade it, but almost never use it :D I can't carry it anywhere, or use in bed (I have wireless keyboard and mouse, and TV works as monitor - but that's not as comfortable as laptop). If I want a big screen, I can connect laptop to TV.

About laptops - they won't be as upgradable as desktops (though you can find spare better CPUs or GPUs from more advanced models on ebay, their price is just a bit too high - when you'll get enough money for such upgrade, it'll be already time to think about buying new laptop), but in several 17"+ models you can see slot for 2nd hard drive (or in some laptops there can be mSATA slot for mSATA SSD), or you can replace DVD-ROM with special HDD case. Only RAM can be upgraded freely, but that's not a big deal at all.

And about SSD - take a look at them, it'd be really great to have at least 120 Gb SSD as system disc (better to get SATA3 than SATA2, but size is more important), while keeping games on HDD. Larger size SSD may cost too much for your config, but such combination (SSD for system, HDD for data/games) definetly worth considering. Don't look at write speed comparison (though it's one of the most known advantages of SSD) - real difference is because of very low latency, everything on SSD will work much faster. It's better to keep about 40-50% of SSD free, keep this in mind too.

Surely, there are some laptop with upgradable GPU and CPU. I wish i can recommend it but It would be 2000 dollar.

Yes I have a SONY Bravia 32". It has HDMI and I played Crysis with my laptop attached to it. Was pretty good to be honest. So, yeah, I wouldn't worry about a monitor just yet.

hey there,

No I do not have the parts and equipment yet, I am fishing around (budget was and is USD770, for now). I'm starting to get the feeling I will have to invest in 4 great parts and the rest I can get by (PSU, Motherboard, dedicated graphics card and Processor), right?

Was in a debate with my brother in law again. Whereby I told him that I don't need an Intel i7, and I believe i5 could suit my needs for at least a few years... But which model of i5 should I consider... Lets say I was to even push the budget up to 1,100 USD?

There is a big pause in discussion, so I'll answer...
B3RT, it's not easy to give a list of parts you need - as there are too many possible combinations. For example, there is a great buch of Intel CPUs, with small price and performance difference (+/- 100 MHz, +/- 10 USD). Same works for Motherboards (plenty of them with little changes) and GPUs (yes, they're like "NVidia GeForce 550 Ti" - but from different manufacturers like Palit or ASUS). We don't know what you can get in Seychelles, so
I can only give you basic guidelines on all parts:
Motherboard - price from 50 to 200 USD. For your situation motherboard for $70-90 will be enough. Though it's one of the main parts, it's pretty cheap (compared to other parts), and can be replaced in future. Main things you need there - socket 1155, 4x DDR3 slots, chipset model doesn't matter (IMHO), any of modern ones (starting from 6 or 7 in model number, like N61 or Z77).
CPU - price about $190-230. First number in model represents generation, like Core i5-3450 is 3-rd Generation CPU. Both 2nd and 3rd generations use 1155 socket, 2nd generation has Intel HD2000 or HD3000 graphics, 3rd generation has Intel HD2500 or HD4000 graphics. So, if you are going to wait a bit with buying discrete GPU, better search for 3rd generation Core i5 with HD4000. CPUs can be sold as OEM (CPU only), or in boxed versions (CPU+cooler). Cooler from boxed version is usually good, and if you're not planning to overclock CPU, better buy boxed version. Separate cooler may cost you $20-50.
RAM - price about $20-30 for 1x 4Gb sitck. Things that matter: DDR3, higher frequency is better, maximum is determined by CPU and Motherboard you've selected. If you're gonna save as much money as possible, and buy more RAM later, 1x 4 Gb stick will be enough. Best preformance is reached when RAM used in pairs (dual-channel mode), so if you're going to buy everything altogether, buy 2x or 4x sticks - from 1 manufacturer (most will work, but I'd prefer Hynix or Kingston), with same frequency.
GPU - as Fum said, best choice would be GeForce GTX560 Ti or Radeon HD 7850 - price about $200-220 for any of them. If you'll see several versions of them from different manufacturers - write them here, we'll try to choose the best.
Case + PSU - they can be bought separately, or together (some cases go with PSU already), but anyway they'll cost you about $100 both.
HDD - 1 Tb 7200 RPM HDD will cost you about $100. Thing that matter - cache size, more is better. You can also buy SSD, but I won't count it here.

For now it's about $700-800 (with 2x RAM sticks) already, but there are some things left, that you may need:
Mouse + Keyboard, cheapest ones will go for $30-40 together.
DVD/Blu-ray drive for $20-50

I guess that should be enough) You'll need monitor (or use TV), and if you'll have money left - buy some better stuff.
You can make a list of what you had found (with prices), and post it here.

LOL, no, even cheap laptops may have upgradeable CPU/GPU. Example - my previous Toshiba Satellite L655 for $600 had both upgradable CPU and GPU.

Most cheap laptop can't be GPU upgradable because it is solder onto motherboard.

IMO the term 'gaming laptop' is an oxymoron. Save money build your own gaming 'desktop' and you will get great perfomance. You really need to spend 1000s of dollars to get a good performing laptop for gaming, when you can spend less than 1000 and get better performance with a desktop.

Unless you plan on traveling with your PC or need to constantly move it from place to place, a 'gaming desktop' is the way to go....

btw, it is also very fun to build your own PC, can't really do that with a laptop.

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the delay in checking your posts. I've just been accepted to University and for the past week I've been in and out of several offices. I haven't had the time to play any games let alone check your posts.

I will be going over them shortly. Again, I apologise. I appreciate the help.
BR8KAR 2012 年 9 月 21 日 下午 10:41
Thanks for the list (I see you've invested much of your time in it.)
In the Seychelles, if I cannot come across any parts, I can order them online, or ask a favour from family or friends travelling overseas (Singapore or Dubai). If I check with some local PC spare suppliers, I could order thru them, but special orders are usually more costly.

I've been accepted to University of London, so gaming has to be put on hold. We start in October 2012 but lessons have been published already ( -.- ) (long distance learning)

I like RTS games (C&C, Starcraft) but lately I've been sticking to role playing and first person shooters... like Alan Wake, Mass Effect 3 (they are the last games I purchase for a while). I'ts been established. No laptop. I need a desktop.

I don't think L655 is upgradeable GPU because GPU is solder into motherboard. Also I don't say cheap laptop is non-upgradeable CPU.

You can get a Lenovo Y580 for $899 and it's got some serious horsepower in it.

In version with just Intel GMA4500 - yes, it's soldered, and I don't know if there is free socket for GPU. If it's available, you'll just have to buy not only new GPU, but also cooling system from another model. In versions with Radeon 5470 or 5650 - there is still GMA4500 soldered into motherboard (though no hybrid graphics available, only dedicated card works), and Radeon Card is removable/upgradable (like this - http://www.productwiki.com/upload/images/ati_mobility_radeon_hd_5650.jpg). As far as I know, most performing card you can install there is Mobility Radeon 5870.

B3RT, good luck with study and parts!
