I agree with both of your points. I think Windows 8 for the tablet will be a great success, it's very easy to use, has a very friendly UI (Metro) and all in all will make a very appealing tablet to everybody, and will serve as a great rival to the iPad, however the iPad has one thing that Microsoft will never have. The App Store. So I reckon it'll not compete anyway, but who knows?
As for Windows 8 on a desktop, Yeah I agree also. I do like how they've made everything more square than all of the rounded edges, but that's just a personal preference. I've been running Windows 7 64-bit ever since it came out and has been the most fantastic OS I have ever experienced, before that it was XP.
I tried the Windows 8 Release Candidate build for PC's on a 100GB partition of my 1TB HDD for about 2 weeks, I really loved the UI but I can't see it being used on desktops, especially when the desktop we all know and love has now become an app!
In terms of game support, this will be an interesting factor to see on Windows 8. I remember steam, and all my other programs and games running absolutely fine, but I've heard rumours from some of my friends that some of the programs and games they used during the time has some issues. Especially DiRT 3. I think that Windows 7 will remain dominant for gamers during the release of Windows 8.
But we will see what happens, personally I'll be sticking with Windows 7 64-bit way through until the next edition of windows (if they make one) unless they make some serious changes to the UI of Windows 8 for Desktops.
In short, I agree with this. It makes no sense. They're practically the same thing but 8 will have some downsides for desktop users over 7.
Because Microsoft doesn't think 7 is good enough.
Then again I also had zero problems with Vista on my XP era laptop.
I do think that Windows 8 might need some really minor adjustments to things such as the default programs and some of the start menu icons for desktop users but on tablets it's bloody amazing and is by far the best of the big three tablet OS's.
Overall Windows 8 is actually a LOT faster than windows 7 once you get used to it and here lies the problem, people hate change and that’s ok, they do not have to upgrade. Nobody is holding a gun to your head and telling you that you must upgrade. So if you really don't like it you can stick with Windows 7 for a long time yet, just as some stuck with XP when Vista came out.
I am also really excited about all the new mobile form factors and even desktop PC's that we are going to be seeing over the next few months. Fun times we live in.
(Also sites like The Verge with their Mac bias can get F***ed!)
Honestly don't care though. People gripe about every major Windows release, call it pointless, blah blah blah millions of people buy it anyway and life goes on.
Quite wrong : they may have a BUILT-IN WINDOW STORE (read it here[steamunpowered.eu]) which can be a real problem for Steam and other platforms in the future...
Not all changes are readily visible...such as changes in how drivers function.
Removing the start menu was a smart move and leads the way to more advanced navigation systems within the OS.. a(n auto hidden) task bar with all your frequently used apps makes a start menu obsolete so truthfully I don't understand why there's been uproar about it.
All my games run fine as well as any software with the exeption of AVs and Firewalls as mentioned previously, and any of you with an SSD will mark exceptional boot times.
I will be buying Windows 8 as soon as it is released.
