Who here uses Linux? I prefer it to Windows.

I find ubuntu horrible, but most of the linux flavors are not very good. very poor support for drivers and hardware/software. sure you could use it for a file server but that is just about it.

I would always pick windows OS over linux/ubuntu.
I've always had more problems with Windows than with Linux regarding drivers and compatibility.

I agree. Linux hardware support have been improved a lot these years.

Ubuntu 12.04 64bit. Steam runs fine :)
Runs good here, too. I had a crash or two when starting/stopping/resuming multiple downloads, but good overall.

I use Linux for *everything* except my games "library". Been doing so for years now. (Firefly) If you say 12.04 rums Steam, I just upgraded, so I will have to give that a try ... been patiently waiting for this for *Years*.

One note about Ubuntu: Go with the LTS releases which have a 2 year cycle (not 6 months). (And if you really can't stand the new Unity interface, like me, look into Cairo-Dock.)
You have to check if new hardware works with linux before you buy it, but if you do everything works just fine. Some Hardware Manufacters cannot even build am Mouse that works on a standard Kernel (Sharkoon, not even USB compilant...)! But everything has improved over the last few years, and I'm sure that steam for Linux will give it a great boost. The only reason I still use Windows is for Gaming and Blu-Ray Support. And thanks to MakeMKV, Blu-Ray just works fine. Only one issue left to fix :)

Ubuntu's Unity was a mess when just released, but now - I can't find an alternative for it. It is very fast & reliable. With a click you can find any file / program you need to open/launch. It also takes almost no space on desktop (with autohide enabled). So there's a lot of screen to browse, work or do usual stuff.

Like Crius said, its better to stick to LTS versions of Ubuntu - they are stable, and more software supports it. Currently I keep windows partition only for bunch of games, and hopefully soon I will use that partition for some more useful purpose :).

Also with Linux your hard disk won't degrade or become fragmented, not like Windows likes to "stress" hard drives for unknown reasons.

windows to run some games, everything else on linux, Intel drivers for HD 3000 are nicely coming, great performance compared to open source driver for AMD (gallium3D) or Nvidia (nouveau), though it ain't as good as Nvidia proprietary drivers.
I run ubuntu 12.04 i have 0 complains ive never run into any trouble and never lost hard ware from lack of support or anything
windows is ok not as pretty not as functional and well it get fogged up over time they even added a "rephresh" into win8

I tried the Windows 8 beta and quickly decided it was time to ditch Redmond for good. I've been dual-booting for years just to play games and occasionally watch a movie on Netflix, but I've found that with a combination of Crossover and WINE (with winetricks) I can play about 95% of my Windows only games with just a few hiccups here and there.

Now that more and more games on Kickstarter are supporting Linux out of the box (Project Eternity, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Planetary Annihilation) and with the Humble Bundle and now Steam releasing source engine games with the Steam Linux client, I'm comfortable going straight Linux with the new PC I'm building to replace my once cutting edge, but now aging computer.

I'm sure there will be some things I can't play because they just won't work properly with emulation, but not enough to make me use that POS Windows 8. The way MS is trying to lock down the user space is so damned offensive to me
yes win8 is defenetly a POS ,,,,but whats worse is that thay are trying to make it harder for us to install anything elce by requiering the venders to implament UEFI with secure boot enabeld by default.

O and hay all nube hear ,, using linux for 10 years or so , right now it's on a HP-G62 triple booting Kubuntu-12.04-x86_64 , Ubuntu-12.04-x86_64 and Backtrack5 , with steam installed on the ubuntu partition (no not a beta tester yet but did apply) with 1 game instaled and running well (world of goo demo) looking for more linux frendly games of the free type as I am pore as dirt .....LOL

Silly to have a seperate partition for kubuntu, while you just can add kde to the ubuntu installation.

That would be like 12 years ago, these days linux support more hardware then any other OS, and yes you can still use your old hardware, where microsoft often drops support with new versions of windows
