I agree. Linux hardware support have been improved a lot these years.
One note about Ubuntu: Go with the LTS releases which have a 2 year cycle (not 6 months). (And if you really can't stand the new Unity interface, like me, look into Cairo-Dock.)
Like Crius said, its better to stick to LTS versions of Ubuntu - they are stable, and more software supports it. Currently I keep windows partition only for bunch of games, and hopefully soon I will use that partition for some more useful purpose :).
Also with Linux your hard disk won't degrade or become fragmented, not like Windows likes to "stress" hard drives for unknown reasons.
Now that more and more games on Kickstarter are supporting Linux out of the box (Project Eternity, Wasteland 2, Shadowrun Returns, Planetary Annihilation) and with the Humble Bundle and now Steam releasing source engine games with the Steam Linux client, I'm comfortable going straight Linux with the new PC I'm building to replace my once cutting edge, but now aging computer.
I'm sure there will be some things I can't play because they just won't work properly with emulation, but not enough to make me use that POS Windows 8. The way MS is trying to lock down the user space is so damned offensive to me
O and hay all nube hear ,, using linux for 10 years or so , right now it's on a HP-G62 triple booting Kubuntu-12.04-x86_64 , Ubuntu-12.04-x86_64 and Backtrack5 , with steam installed on the ubuntu partition (no not a beta tester yet but did apply) with 1 game instaled and running well (world of goo demo) looking for more linux frendly games of the free type as I am pore as dirt .....LOL
VINNY
Silly to have a seperate partition for kubuntu, while you just can add kde to the ubuntu installation.
That would be like 12 years ago, these days linux support more hardware then any other OS, and yes you can still use your old hardware, where microsoft often drops support with new versions of windows
