SteamPi
Hey, I just saw the new SteamOS, and an idea sprang to mind. I was thinking that I should try it on my Raspberry Pi! Since it would just be streaming the content from the computer, there shouldn't be much strain on the ARM processor. I am very curious to see if this would actualy work. Do you have a Raspberry Pi? Do you think the ARM can handle it? Post in the comments your thoughts and ideas on a "SteamPi."

I was thinking the same thing myself, but it would really depend on the requirements the streaming would require. Sure enough you can play HD videos on the RPi, but you can play HD videos on just about anything in your hometheater and I'd think it's fair to say they wouldn't be able to handle streaming a game. The specific issues I see are this: 512mb ram is really not enough; and the same goes for the CPU, it just doesn't have enough juice.

If anyone can do it then Valve, and the linux community, can.. But I wouldn't get my hopes up
This is a very interesting idea actually... try it out! I'd be very interested to see how this turns out - it's basically only displaying pre-rendered images so I don't see why the RAM would be too much of a limit - the 360 and PS3 make do with 512 Mb RAM and that has to store all the stuff needed for the actual rendering

Interstingly, if this worked, you could theoretically do it with an Android smartphone too
You would have to buy the mpeg license for the raspberry and "mod" the steam client to use that hardware acell codec.
In theory it works in real life I dont think so.
lus you would have to compile the steam client for arm-hf witch i think valve will not do.

This was one of the first things I thought of when I heard about SteamOS. I've got a Pi running raspxbmc right now and it streams 1080p video no problem, I don't see why there would be a difference in streaming game content in 1080p. I really hope someone makes this happen
I have raspberry pi that is currently running RiscOS, and I would love to steamOS available for it :)
that would be great !!!!!
Valve are probably building Steam OS on top of Ubuntu or something, meaning there would be no support for the pi. Hopefully though, it will be ported. I would love to be able to stream my games to my TV..
Steam OS on Pi would be so nice.

Why would it matter that it runs ubuntu? Yes ubuntu is more intensve than other linux ditros, so it may not be able to run anyway. If thats what you mean, then yeah. I don't think they would port it to a simpler distro that the pi would need. This makes me want to try putting ubuntu on my pi, just for kicks.

Ubuntu doesn't support the ARM processor that the Pi uses. I'm not sure specifically what it supports, but I know they don't plan on bringing it to the Pi.

That article links to multi-ARM servers.

What Linux distros will be supported at launch?

Fedora, Debian and ArchLinux will be supported from the start. We hope to see support from other distros later. (Because of issues with newer releases of Ubuntu and the ARM processor we are using, Ubuntu can’t commit to support Raspberry Pi at the moment.) You will be able to download distro images from us as soon as the Raspberry Pi is released, and we will also be selling pre-loaded SD cards shortly after release.

@rotNdude

Thanks! That clears everything up. Good find. I din't even think to go there.
