Why has DDR3 RAM gotten so expensive?
It's ridiculous that it's going for pretty much $10 a GB. When I got my 8GB of G.Skill 1600Mhz it was $55 and it has tighter timings then normal - 8-8-8-24. The same RAM now costs $80+ and so I guess I won't be upgrading anytime soon. I'd like to hear some other peoples opinions on this.

Hahahaha. You should have tried buying a 512KB upgrade for an onboard ati card 20 years ago.

I remember when we had our first PC it cost $100 for a 4MB RAM upgrade. Isn't technology supposed to get cheaper the longer it has been out?

ram is cheep compared to the past prices over alll
PowerHaus930 28. sep. 2013 kl. 17:08
I agree with that but why has DDR3 gone up in the past year or so? Like I said I got my RAM for $55 and now the same exact RAM is more than $80. That's like an outdated processor or SSD going up in price 50% over the course of a year or so. It doesn't make any sense. Could it possibly have to do with the new consoles using more RAM?

The RAM production has been hit much in the same way HDDs were hit 2 years ago. It has nothing to do with the coming consoles.

What do you mean it has been "hit"?
Rumpelcrutchskin 28. sep. 2013 kl. 17:34
You are right, the prices have been going up steadily over past few months.

Never mind, I can't seem to find a source, so I might just have dreamt it. Don't know why prices are rising then, but it's still not very expensive...

I have only been into building PC's for the past few years so I thought it was expensive when I paid $55 for my 8GB lol. I hope it goes down eventually so I can upgrade to 16GB.

how about the old RLL drives before the IDE`s.I Paid 300 bucks for 100 meg drive the size of 2 cdrom drives and sounded like something cranking over and starting up.

Memory has always jumped up and down but usualy once it starts to rise in price it does not come back down.Mostly because a new chip is on the way DDR4.
all in all the computer market has a big affect on prices "supply and demand"

It was a fire in the factory.

The most I paid in the past was $130 for a 1GB ddr stick.

Tbh I can't remember what I was paying for 256MB and 512MB sdram back in the duron days.
