I also really enjoy FPS games and prefer useing a gamepad but in a multiplayer environment you just can't compete with the accuracy of a mouse. I'm looking forward to trying some of the Battlefield titles and Planetside 2 with the steam controller. I'm hopeful that I'll have an enjoyable experience.
ill give an example, i have EVERY SINGLE FUNCTION of arma 3 mapped to a playstation 3 controller.. every function is on there in a very easy to use way, for example, switching weapons, changing grenades, changing optics is all done by pressing the reload button and using the d-pad to switch weapons, change weapons, switch grenades, etc.. another button brings up all the stance modifier commands and one used for squad commands
it requires more thought, more effort, more ingenuity, to put together a good controller scheme and when its all said and done i can access ALL functions without moving my hands
as for the touchpads on the steam controller, i cant say how ill feel about them, i use thumbsticks just fine so there will have to be something significant with these touchpads.. they cant feel too foreign or i probably wont like it and get a PS4 dualshock 4 controller instead
thats exactly how i feel.. as stated earlier, im quite used to thumbsticks, thumbsticks work quite well and im not sure how the symmetrical layout of face buttons will work either because for just about anything outside of first person shooters the right thumbstick does little more than just change camera angles while the buttons become more important for the right hand, so there are good reasons why i might not like it
for me the touchpads will need to have some kind of significant improvement, and theres not even a noticable improvement if i switch to mouse, so i doubt the touchpads will offer much of one... so this price has to be sub-$40 or im upgrading to a PS4 controller instead.. the gryos, accelerometers and light sensor can be mapped for other controls, i believe it still has pressure sensitive buttons, and the touchpad on that would probably be better for mouse games than the much smaller touchpads on the steam controller
Is it better than wheel and pedals? More than likely not.
Suitable replacement for my flightstick/hotas and rudder pedals? Again...Highly unlikely....
I dont see what it adds to the gaming experience so why should I get one?
None of my current gear could be/needs to be replaced by this.
To be honest, I dont see a huge advantage from using a 360 or ps4 controller to this. I might be so inclined to say my wii controller still offers more than this does.
TLDR:
Not seeing this as a device I want. Offers nothing I deem useful.
Steam advertising must be doing a bad job because I usually want all the newest gadgets/HID's to play my games with.
You say steam controller...I say its just another 360/ps4 controller.
I dont need more of those.
its worse than that.. keyboard/mouse users dont want it because, well, theyre used to keyboard and mouse, why would they want a controller? why would they want to learn an all new interface that wont add anything?
then look at people like me, im a controller user, former console player.. my right thumb is just as accurate using a thumbstick as i would using a mouse (actually, i find im more accurate with the thumbstick).. so what are these touchpads going to do for me? what will they bring to the table a smaller thumbstick wont?.. simple, nothing
theyve managed to create a controller that will be quite foreign to BOTH keyboard/mouse users AND controller users, and with the xbox one and PS4 controllers being so easy to install, i cant imagine they will sell much of these.. especially when they eliminated their best feature.. that touchpad/screen they were going to add that would have allowed games to customize new buttons or other functions to that screen, show menus, sliders for different controls.. plus the face buttons swapped with the touchpad... really? so now your thumb has to cross all other buttons just to reach the most commonly used A button?
epic failure on steams behalf
