I know the RAM is an obcenity currently, but I plan on getting a 4GB (possible 8GB) stick of RAM in the very near future, and I don't want to choke a good PC if there's anything I can do about it.

Yes the CPU can run 64bit however you are going to need a 64bit OS as well. If you have a 32bit OS then that is a problem and you will need to get a 64bit copy.

FYI there is a Windows XP as well as Athlon XP so a more clear title might help get the best responses.

With WIndows Vista, 7 or 8 you might be pushing it. Yes they will run but performance might be better on Windows XP. On the other hand Windows XP is not a good investment to go buy because it is obsolete and will hold a new machine back when you do get a new machine.

However a sensible option would be 64bit Linux. Steam OS 64bit for example when it comes out next year. In the mean time, Linux Mint 64bit would also be good.

You can usually get a Linux that will run with less than Windows for free. Some very micro versions of Linux for example include Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux. These distros are usually around 100MB or less. So it will be very easy for your machine to run them.

Trying to upgrade 8 years old PC is kinda waste of money.

With xp 64 and win 7 64 with 2GB you'll run out of ram often, keep that in mind if you upgrade the OS 64bit before ram.

Btw, xp 64 works fine for games I had 0 problems with it.

Unless you're turning it into a NAS server to which the upgrades can run real cheap for a decent return.

I ran XP 64-bit for a few years and had no issues with it.
It was a few years after release once they had worked most of the bugs out.
However it is going to be EOL very soon and I dont recommend it.
Also new hardware maynot support drivers for that OS for much longer.
I recommend Windows 7 64-bit if you are going to reinstall the OS anyway.
You cannot upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit of any version of Windows without a complete reinstall of the OS from scratch.

As far as I was aware when I was running XP 64 bit that it was Server 2003 with 64 bit and a Win XP feel. Not sure it was true but some software did not work correctly.

Since I went with win 7 64-bit version though I haven't had any problems.

Again I'd suggest getting a copy of win 7 as XP will be EOL in the next few months and some games coming up may not even support XP or even low amounts of memory.
