"No Connection" when on ethernet, even though internet is working fine.
Hello all!

I use an ethernet cable at university because the WiFi here is atrocious, and I have had no problems connecting to the internet using it. (I do have to log in every time I connect the cable). However, whenever I'm on ethernet, Steam claims that there is no internet connection, and that I have to use offline mode. When I'm just on the school WiFi, though, Steam connects without issue. This has been mildly annoying until now, as I cannot play Rome II unless an update is installed, and the WiFi is so bad that the update has stopped downloading and the rate is 0 bytes/second. My ethernet works wonderfully, but I cannot use it to download the update because as soon as I connect laptop to cord, Steam says that there is no internet connection, when in fact internet works fine (I'm writing this now whilst connected via ethernet, even as Steam claims there is no connection). Any suggestions as to how to remedy this?

On a side note, I've also noticed that when I try to play Call of Duty 4 multiplayer, when connected to ethernet none of the servers load; they only do so when on WiFi.

Thank you!

I don't know much about networking stuff but I think it may be Windows Firewall blocking Steam. Check to see if your firewall settings for LAN connection ( ethernet cable as opposed to wi-fi ) are set differently. Go into windows firewall and see if your LAN connection is listed as a private network or a public network and then do the same for wi-fi. If the settings are different then each other make them the same. Or you may be able to put Steam on the list of allowed programs in the Firewall menu.

Yes it probably has to do with either your computer's firewall or else your school network's firewall.

the school is most likely blocking ports for gaming

But he said Steam works when he uses wi-fi just not with the LAN cable.

Well that's because they work in different networks. So different blocks etc.

Same thing at my workplace. We keep Wifi more open because sometimes customers need to access things that normally are blocked at cabeled network.

Hi! Thank you all very much for your responses. It's not the Firewall; I even turned the whole firewall off and Steam still wouldn't connect with the ethernet. It looks like it is the school's WiFi. In any case, thank you all for your help! :)
