$1000 PC Build for friend
My friend is looking into buying a new PC Build for $1000, and I made this: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1B9Yg Whilst he made :http://pcpartpicker.com/p/1Ba52 I say the build I made more well rounded, getting better performance in rendering/photoshop (which he does), whilst getting maybe 5 less FPS in games. Please post which of the two you think is better. Thanks!

I like your friend's build better but I would modify it a little. That case comes with buttload of fans already installed and has USB 3.0 sockets in front.
And I would use Haswell instead.

or if he really wants to use nice microtower he could go with those:

If you're planning on serious OC, ditch the Evo. It doesn't perform well compared to other air or water coolers. But it is one of the best for sub $30.

There are two problems with your (OP's) build:
The memory is slow and you are cutting too close with this 500W power supply. 600W would be better since this CPU draws lot more power then Haswells or Ivy's.

maybe with an 2nd gpu...then i would say 650w...dark power pro or like that

Well, the memory can just be overclocked, and I have a 550watt with a 4.7ghz OC'd i7 3820 and 16GB of Corsair Vengance OC'd to 2400mhz, so I say it should be "sufficient". Sure, not enough for crossfirex/sli, but, ill change the PSU to 550watts.

Well, I have seen pretty decent performance, but, some of the cheaper closed loop water cooling solutions (Say, H60) dont have such good reviews from what I have seen. But, to each their own.

Cheap watercoolers have no point, the performance is same as 212 EVO. If you really want to get into watercooling then get Corsair H100i, this at least gives some real results compared to 212 EVO.

The higher end water cooling is where you go, or with one of those ridiculously large Noctua ones.

Once you break into the $65+ price range, the evo's performance just can't stand up.

The Noctua D14 is arguebly the best air cooler out there. It's also pushing $80 some days on Amazon. OC tests on the D14 show pretty impressive performance.
