1.9 GHz A-Series Quad-Core A8-4500M or 1.8 GHz Core i5 3337U?
I've been looking for an an affordable gaming laptop below 500$ and I've narrowed it down to these 2 processors. I am not good with computers at all and was wondering which would preform better / have better fps etc. Or if you have any other suggestions for better gaming laptops below 500 I would greatly apreciate it. Thanks! I'll put the links to the amazon pages so you can inspect the other characteristics of the laptops.

they are fairly close

i5 is dual core with ht and intel 4000 igp
a8 is a quad core with the 7640g

gpu comparison
http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Radeon-HD-7640G.69836.0.html
amd is slightly better

cpu comparison
http://cpuboss.com/cpus/Intel-Core-i5-3337U-vs-AMD-A8-4500M
intel is better
Get a Core i5 laptop with a better video card than that.
Comparing just two machines out of thousands is silly.

For gaming go with the AMD A8-4500m because of the GPU. The GPU will make the biggest difference in games and the GPU in the A8 is significantly better than ULV HD 4000.

Also if there is room to add in a dedicated GPU (which there is probably not but you could check) then that makes a better upgrade option because of hybrid crossfire.

Edit:
I could build you a complete Desktop system including monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse but NOT Windows 8 OS for that same price that would perform much better and have much better upgrade options. You could of course add Windows later and meanwhile use Linux. You can also re-use a older copy of Windows if you have the disc for one now.

Ask me if you are interested I would be happy to post a $400, $450 and $500 build for complete desktop systems that could beat or even double the performance of those laptops.

If it is in any way possible for you to use a desktop you should do that instead. Laptops are not as good for gaming even though if you pay enough you can get one that is good-enough.

Or he could just get a local PC shop to do it, minus the postage?

I meant put it together on PC Part Picker for free for fun. Not to actually physically build the thing. No way am I offering to do that. You have the wrong idea.

I just think it is fun to help people pick parts for systems for them to build themselves.

Yes that still does cost postage but in the USA very little. It would cost less than at a PC shop because they charge extra for their parts and labour both.

See I was just going to recommend some builds on this website which shops Newegg, Amazon, NCIX, Tiger Direct and many more stores.

Ultimately, you're talking about gaming here.
What games exactly?
Cause for gaming, no sub $600-700 laptop is going to do the job, period.

EDIT:
HP.com has Envy 15.6" starting at $529[www.shopping.hp.com]

When configured with the following:
> AMD 8750M GPU
> 8GB RAM
> 1TB HDD
Comes out to $650, not bad at all.
If you want 1920x1080 screen instead of 1366x768, add $40.

I have the 1.8 GHz Core i5 3337U in my work laptop for day to day tasks and even doing that is not fast at all. It sits and spins somtimes trying to multi-task. I couldn't imagine trying to game with it. I do nothing but run e-mail, some documents, web browser, and some UNIX sessions with 2 screens. One laptop screen and one monitor.

That CPU has a Turbo of 2.7Ghz though. When running on AC power, set the Windows Power Profile to High Performance, that will help prevent such a CPU from auto-down clocking below it's based clock of 1.8Ghz. The Turbo clock only kicks in during higher/constant loads though. It is sometimes the constant up and down switch of CPU clocking that can create a somewhat slow experience.

I would also go to Intel's support drivers site[www.intel.com] and check for newer drivers. As that can help overall performance too.

Yeah, I know. That's not the problem. It runs on AC power 24/7 and it's set right. It's Win 7 64 with a corporate install that is done right with about 200,000 of the same laptops in my business. It's at one of the top 4 banks in the US.

Or could just be slow because of hidden background processes and such.
Look in Task Manager every once in while, see what all is listed under Processes.
Alot of apps in Startup, or certain antivirus/security software can also slow a system down.

What does your business use for security software?
Do u have user-based control over that, or is it controlled via corporate network servers?

It's corporate version of Norton. There are a lot of tasks that talk to other severs. It has a lot of internal "spyware" stuff if you know what I mean.

Seriously!? OMG Norton is crap.

But yea in this type of setup, u are probably just getting lagg due to the software u all use, which has to have a constant network connection to a bank server. So could just be lagg in the software and/or network. Not the local system in general.

Yeppers. You're more than likely correct. Doesn't help the HDD is slow RPM. It's a Thinkpad. Solid as can be but yeah.

The AMD Radeon HD 7660G is better than the AMD Radeon 8650G isn't it?
It would also depend what rest the Lenovo G505s runs at.

If it runs at a higher resolution, then it will be that much slower.

In general 1366x768 runs at twice the performance at 1920x1080 as it has roughly half the pixels to render.

1366x768 = 1049088 vs 1920x1080 = 2073600.

If you don't believe me on that feel free to check as many 3rd part sources that are not bound by another component as you wish. ;-)
