Processor: AMD Phen Black Edition 1090T X6 @ 3.2GHz
Graphics Card: AMD Radeon 6770 HD 1GB Cache
RAM: 8GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 2TB Hard Drive 5400RPM
Motherboard: Not Sure
Optical Drive: DVD/Blu-Ray Read/Write
Power Supply: Not entirely sure.
Also for the motherboard, download Speccy, it will give you all info on your hardware except the PSU and PC case.
Deppending on your budget, you should replace the components in the following order: graphics card, harddrive, aftermarket CPU cooler.
Now to be blunt you only really need a better GPU (GTX 760 and 7950 are currently the best buy graphics card). The harddrive is a bit slow, 7200RPM is standard these days. The aftermarket cooler because AMD stock cooler is noisy as hell.
And maybe an SSD. The CPU seems quite capable of handling newer games and 8Gb or ram is enough for all new games.
I recommend the AMD Radeon HD 7950 with boost and 3 free games for about $200 or wait for HD 9000 series if you want to spend more. Like this for example:
$190 after $30 rebate

$210 after $30 rebate, this one is the better card of the 2

Also in terms of a new PSU I would recommend something above 500w continuous output and 80 Plus Gold or Platinum certified. Having 750w 80 PLus Gold / Platinum would not hurt either.
$80~ after $20 rebate 750w Gold

Other than that you might want a new case. It might be too short for the HD 7950 graphics card or you just might want something nice with more fans. I can recommend several for $30-$100 or higher if you want. Just tell me how much you want to spend.
going from the 1090t to a fx8000 will not gain anything for gaming
when upgrading oem pc
if you get a new board you need a new case, the front panel connectors will be different (power/reset button, power/hdd lights, audio, usb)
But overall no reason you can't take the internals of the HP desktop and install into a new case of your liking. Long as the motherboard will fit.
Then get a better PSU and GPU.
A 5400rpm drive is not good for running the OS off of.
Maybe get a better performance drive and reinstall your OS.
For motherboard info, run CPU-Z, click Mainboard tab and then goodle that model# for the specs.
For the HP PSU, u will have to look at the sticker on it, inside the case.
I want to spend about $300. I found a case made by Coolermaster for like $100 (on sale on newegg from $200)
@Bad-Motha
I probably will install a new graphics card, most likely a Radeon HD 7870, and get a 750 Watt PSU, as I think that would be sufficient, but I may new to research that.
And I putting in 16GB of RAM as well as a new motherboard. I'm keeping the Hard Drive how it is for now, as it works well with this current setup.
I know this might go over $300, but the RAM and Motherboard are probably the least important.
I would say in order of Importance, It's the Case, Power Supply Unit and the Graphics Card.
If you want to really help, get an SSD and clean install your OS to it. Then install games to a secondary HDD. Or at the very least get a good 7200rpm HDD to house your OS on, like a WD Black for example.
If later on you want to upgrade your CPU or u want more options from a Motherboard so u can OC your current CPU, then replace the motherboard. A good AM3+ board with 970 or 990 AMD Chipset will work fine and allow your current CPU to work, while providing an upgrade path to the AM3+ AMD FX Series CPUs.
^My thoughts exactly. The OEM motherboard shouldn't really hinder performance, it will just lack in overall features, such as the ability to OC the CPU and such.
Your current specs are not bad, focus on New Case, PSU and GPU. And maybe a high performance drive to run the OS off of. As you could easily change just about everything in the system, but leaving the OS + Games run off of a 5400rpm drive will slow down the entire system performance potential.
+1 to Bad-Motha
In most cases, an OEM system can run just fine as it in it's case. Except in a situation where it's a Mini-Tower/Slim case where a new GPU might not fit, as you might forced to use a half-slot card if it is a slim case. And in a Mini/Micro ATX case, while a new PSU and GPU might work/fit, you might run into a heat issue due to the tight space and overall lack of cooling fans. This is where a new ATX case will help alot.
Also could u look on the HP case for a sticker containing a full length Product# or Model#
By us looking that up, we can then see what case it is using and such.
Or by looking here; http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ads/elite-products/products.html#desktops
If you have the SLIM or Ultra-SLIM HP Elite Desktop, then you defintely need a new case before u can really upgrade the internal parts. As those do not use a standard sized ATX PSU.
HP Pavillion Elite HPE Series
It is actually a well sized case.

Yea those cases are considered Micro ATX form-factor.
Overall not bad. The only problem with changing the case is you may not be able to reuse the face-plate for the Card Reader. But the front power button and leds should be standard 2pin wire for each and thus is what is considered "starndard" in a 3rd party case design. The card reader however should be able to be reused without a face-plate (if that ends up being the case) and should fit in a standard front-mount 3.5" drive bay.
You really shouldn't have a problem replacing the PSU and GPU in the current case setup.
As long as the GPU does not exceed a length of 10 inches, but measure on your own if needed just to be sure. As the HDD cage could be in the way, if a GPU is very long. The PSU however is of standard ATX size. Just needs to be replaced to a higher capacity one so it will provide enough power and any required PCI-E power plugs that a new GPU would need.
ita an 880g board, which is fine for the pii 1090t
overall id say its a good setup yet
should be easy to swap it into a new case
front panel pinout for the board

OP do I have it right thinking that you mean $300 total on all upgrades combined or was it $300 on the case only?
I have a recommendation for $300 after rebates total for Case, PSU and GPU.

The HD 7950 GPU is great and comes with 3 free games.
The PSU is good. I would have wanted 80 Plus Gold but 80 Plus Bronze fit the budget much better. 600w on a good 80 Plus Bronze should more than satisify your system's needs.
Though it is cheap the case is also very impressive, specially for such a super low price. The case can fit up to 5 120mm fans or 3 + a 240mm Radiaotr for watercooling, comes with one 120mm rear fan already installed, can fit a 15 inch graphics card, has a nice HDD cage for HDD or SSD and is fullsize ATX.
