CPU for AM3 95W Motherboard
I am looking for a good CPU to use, but a lot of the best ones are only for AM3+ or 125W. Most of the ones i did find, however, where from a line that was discontinued. The minum I want is a 3GHz x4, but would like around a 3.4 x4. Anyone know of good CPU's that would work in my motherboard and aren't discountinued? (I could by i used one by i would like to see if there are any current ones that would work.)

You mean AM3+ or just AM3?
For a good AM3+ processor my suggestion would be AMD FX-6300.
It's 3.5GHz (Turbo 4.1GHz) 6 core processor, and it's only 95w.
No just for "AM3", with no "+" As i already said, there plenty of those around, but unfortunately I can not use those.

What board do u currently have?
AMD Athlon II X2 250 is what i have.
Are the Phenoms better than the Athlons? I think i might just buy a used phenom then if i can find a good priced one. The most i've seen in a nPhenom is a 3.0/3.4 turbo, so i might get that one.

Some AM3 board can support AM3+ CPUs with a BIOS update. Check your model number than check with the manufacturer. You might be able to slide a FX 6300 in there for $120.

Also, why not replace your motherboard? It might be cheaper than buying a top of the line obsolete CPU which are still fairly expensive.

You could get a new board + AMD FX 6300 6 core 3.5Ghz for around $200. Here:

You might need new RAM if you have DDR2. You can get 8GB of DDR3 that is okay quality for about $50 though.

I have 8GB DDR3 RAM rith now, so that won't be a problem. I don't think a AM3+ will work because it is a deiiferent socket type and has an extra pin. The best thing probaly would be to buy a ew motherboard, so I'll look into that. Thanks for the links.

Best thing you could do is check the mobo cpu support list for your mobo whatever it is.

No body can really tell you what cpu would do if you don't tell them what mobo it is and what bios revision?

A propus core x4 or x3 will go in an older AM2 non + mobo if the bios supports it.

Check this out "Some manufacturers have brought AM3+ support to some of their AM3 motherboards via a simple BIOS upgrade."

he said it takes ddr3 = am3 board
am2/am2+ boards use ddr2
I'm using a N68S3+ and i ddon't think it supports this. I think a new motherboard is my best option.

id recomend a new board and cpu for an upgrade

thats a am2 design that only supports am3 cpus (sub 95w)
its a plain 3 phase, not split like the newer ones, and 2 transistors per phase vs 2 or 3 + 1driver

I was thinking 790x that started as am2+ but did a switch over to ddr3 then called itself am3.

Anyway back on topic the am3mickymouse N68S3+ board OP has is utter trash, time for an overhaul mobo and cpu then.

Well I'd recommend the AMD FX 6 or 8 cores and a new board. You could go to the top for like $350 with a 990FX motherboard and FX 8350 CPU or just get a FX 6300 (6 core 3.5ghz) and new AM3+ 970 motherboard for $200 and of course there is a whole range in between.
