You go ahead and lie to the OP that a $300 PC can match an Xbox 360 or that 6 months from now some magic hardware will come out where a $300 PC can match an Xbox One.
What I'm talking about isn't picked up on some forum. Don't believe me? Why dont you google the topic and look at what experts have to say. People from AMD and others in the hardware/game development industry.
The fact that you mention overclocking increasing performance by 50% is a MASSIVE clue that you are quite frankly full of it. That is absolutely hilarious and if you weren't deceiving someone that wants legitimate help I would be laughing. Instead I'm shaking my head that someone that is so utterly clueless is giving help to people that actually need it.
I hope the OP listens to people that aren't as clueless as the console fanboys who claim that a PS4 can match a Titan or even a 580/680. Because you are the other end of the extreme.
Stock clock is 600Mhz. That's not only over 50%, it's over 60%.
My experiences so far tell me that a stable % increase in clock speed usually results in a proportionate % increase in performance unless there is another thing bottlenecking it. If there is you can often find out what and overclock it also. I'll be back with ARMA 2 demo results.
Consoles give you a SINGLE set of specs to work with and give you access to the hardware at a low level. That results in a lot more efficiency and optimization. It takes a more powerful PC to achieve the same results as a console. That isn't freaking magic it's the damn truth.
But hey what does John Carmack know right? I mean he's only a programming genius and rocket scientist. You're Rove.
PS: No high end PC hardware from 2005-2006 (the years the 360 and PS3 released) will be able to run ANYTHING made today as well as the 360 and PS3 can even though they are faster. Oh but wait...we can overclock it and make it 60% faster! Double the framerates by overclocking!!
Arguing with someone that pulls stuff out of his you know what just isn't worth it. So have a good one, peace!
There is no way your going to make a decent computer,at that price, you cant even get a cpu / gpu that can effectivley run arma 2.He probably wants to run it on at least medium
I was able to play singleplayer and drive the humvee with no problems navigating due to FPS even at 70~ MPH (top speed) or KMPH or whatever it measures it in.
Given those results I think he will probably be able to achieve 40-60 FPS with a A8-3870K, maybe even 60FPS solid at 1920*1080 with the correct detail settings. Like I said, A8-3870k is about 2.5 times better than the A4 GPU without overclocking. Overclocking it he can get it to be more than 3 times better, maybe even about 4 times better if he is lucky and has a good cooler and motherboard.
I definetly would not recommend the A4. The CPU is too slow to keep up with next gen consoles which rules out the possibility of upgradeing the GPU to par with a discrete card. I also would not recommend it specifically because AMD states it is meant for things like webbrowsing and word processing. If it can run some games right now ok, but a proper gaming computer should run games for years to come and that I think the A4 will not do at all even with all possible upgrades.
However for someone wanting a budget gaming build I would recommend the A8-3870K and I think this can be both overclocked and upgraded to last for several years as a budget gaming PC. I'm not promising ultra settings or anything, but it should get the job done one way or another and at least you can play.
You'll probably have to upgrade when PS4 and Xbox One hit though. At that point you'll probably need a HD 7790 GPU or better and possbily a slight CPU overclock. You could also just play older or PC only games for a while though.
Go buy one and be proven wrong. You've got money to burn right? $300 is nothing right? You all think a watercooled i7-3660x + GTX 680 is a bare minimum rig and you need to have 2 i7 Extreme CPUs and SLI GTX 780 to actually do anything right?
Well then go waste a insignificant amount of money, only $300 and prove or disprove your uneducated point.
It's like a bunch of dogs barking or trolls howling. I think you don't even know what you are saying. You're just making agressive sounds. Not one person has even made a build and said, "I know this is over your budget but it's bare minimum.". They've just trashed on the OP.
Who here HAS a A8-3870K and wants to tell me about their personal experience with it's performance? Anyone even have a AMD APU they can test like me? Or did you guys just read some review somewhere and want to bully some poor guy with $300 who wants to get on Steam and use it for what it's worth?
You guys keep spitting other peoples opinions at me. Don't you have any of your own?
Also:
Once he has it it is still upgradeable. Adding on a nice discrete GPU would boost performance a lot. Remeber the CPU in the APU is just a shrunken down Phenom II x4 @ 3Ghz and that can probably support like a HD 7790 to HD 7950 though that might be pushing it. Anyways adding one of those discrete cards would boost performance a lot and let him turn those settings up.
It's apparent that for 300$ you can't get a next gen capable PC, that's a fact. And since he would use it for gamig he can just as well by a PS4 (and enjoy far better visuals, yes he won't have the functonality of the PC, but that's what consoles are made for) and plug in a keyboard and mouse.
Instead post some benchmarks:

The A8-3870K can't really run BF3, but older games are quite playable on it, though their Starcraft 2 results on high details do look a bit biased, unless blizzard optimized SC2 in the meantime.
They are always updating drivers and stuff to fix FPS issues.
For example I see one place on Tiger Direct where they are advertising the AMD A10-5800K as having only like 30~ FPS in Sim City at 720p, meanwhile on a more recent page on Newegg they are advertising it as having 72 FPS at 1080p in Sim City. Personally I believe the 72 FPS at 1080 (the better and newer one) and I think the other was taken like right at release or something when the drivers barely supported it and didn't use it properly. They can probably still get better also.
And with that said i'd like to say i realise i might be being a bit unrealistic, and also i'm not 12 by the way either lol... I've been gaming on this old cp since '07, I actually don't know alot about computers but it's pretty basic if you ask me, i don't know if it would cost more to upgrade everything or if i should get a whole new computer. I understand i was pretty brief with my question but heres my computers parts
cpu: Intel Pentium E2140
mobo: MS-7267
ram: 2GB DDR2
HD: 120GB
Grapics: NVIDIA geforce 8400 GS.
I know i need a whole new motherboard because I think when i had a surround sound speaker system plugged in it messed up my audio .. but thats about it... I just also think my harddrive is so small. I would also like to add this computer is slow.. i recently discoverd systemrequirementslab(lol) and it says i cant run games that i already play but i get mild lag on, like Left 4 Dead 2.
I could also save up to 400 dollars, I would really like to know if i can get a computer like _I_
said I dont really want to spend like 600 dollars on a computer... I know alot of you probably spent 600-800 on yours maybe more but i think thats outragious it will last long but its also way out of my budget, and i'm just not even willing to spend that much on a computer if it wasn't, Thanks again everyone.
Hey so you can probably re-use your case. Maybe not your Power Supply, depending how many watts it is.
So you could take one of my builds for $270~ and then buy a 500w PSU for $15-20. Or you could also just get a case includeing one from the list I provided.
Saving your money is not a bad idea either. Personally though I'd just take the build I made and upgrade later if you have to or as and if it is possible.
This build for $600 can probably max out many current games if you change your mind about spending more:

Good luck P.S( Dont spend more money than your comfertable with, if you can wait a year and save up its worth it.)
Heres a build for $545, it has a six-core processor, a good graphics card, and a pretty good power supply( You will have to upgrade that though, since its only 380 watts, and the pc takes about 300 watts
http://pcpartpicker.com/parts/partlist/
If you want to save some money you can-
use your old hard drive
get rid of the optical drive( personally i reccomend having at least one)
This is a good pc that will run arma on medium with decent fps
Also 380w PSU is probably too small unless it is 380 continous and not 380 peak?
