Ps, 7870 is slower.
Locally the 670 GTX is about $40 more than the 7950 and $40 less than the 7970 so I think it would be better compared against those 2. Of course if power consumption is an issue than I know the 7870 is very good and I think the 660 GTX would be about the same.
But really I've been keeping my eye on that card and never really seen any issues mentioned. And I have seen it recommend for it's cost to performance ratio by a lot of people who really would know what they are talking about.
I might follow up on what you've mentioned before purchase as I haven't been in much of a rush. I bought a HD4890 OC Vapor-X 2Gb (Sapphire) just as people were switching to directX 11 and have really only had an issue recently with one game that "may" require directX 11 and not 10. Anything less than a HD7870 wouldn't even be much of an upgrade.
