HD 7970 Crossfire vs GTX 690 . . .
Of these two options, what would you guys recommend? I have a 7970 and while it's an awesome card, I want even more performance. Would you recommend adding another 7970 in crossfire or getting a GTX 690? If I get a GTX 690, I have another computer I could put the 7970 in, so it wouldn't go to waste. Thanks in advance for any input.

That's what I thought. There is SLI going on INSIDE the card, but not on the mobo, so what Jamebonds1 said made no logical sense to me.

It is dual GPU in single card and act like SLI. Each GPU will be 8X speed from PCIe16X. SLI video card won't work if motherboard don't support SLI.

You are literally the only person I've ever seen say you need an SLI capable mobo to run a single GTX 690. So no offense, but I'm calling BS. My mobo does have a PCIe 3.0 slot at 16x which is what is required to run the GTX 690, not a mobo capable of running two cards in SLI.

Umm... think i'm going leave this OP who not keep civil with me. But I'm just say that my friend have GTX 690 and it didn't work on his non SLI capable motherboard while it only work on my computer.

Yes, please leave this thread because you are wrong!

I believe in NVIDIA more then AMD because before... I had unstable products from AMD that were a piece of Sh!t, then I have NVIDIA which is stable and does not require additional requirements like AMD. Not saying i'm a NVIDIA fanboy, but hate to bring it to you but if you think AMD is better.. wait till years and years of using it then boom. Now it's unstable crap that needs more voltage or something or a better PSU

AMD tends to give you a better deal for your money, Like the GTX titan from nvidia...What a rip off card. An AMD 7970 can run on par with a 500 plus dollar GTX 680 for 100 dollars less. As for the voltage that hardly matters to people when PSU are generally cheap.

True, but in my experince AMD shorts out sometimes and it is a ripoff kinda. But it might be worth it a bit i dont know :P

If you have the money the GTX 690 would be the way to go, especially if you are running games that use physx which radeons will not run at all.

If you're considering dropping a grand on a 690 anyway I'd advise checking out the Titan instead. It's a tiny bit slower (~15%) than the 690 but it is a single GPU card, so you won't have to worry about setting up SLI profiles or micro stuttering. It runs cooler and a bit quieter than the 690, so like that card you wouldn't have to upgrade your PSU. It also has more memory (6GB) than any other single card out there, which would be helpful if you plan on loading up on Skyrim texture mods.

The GK110 chip inside it is the same one used in the $3500 Tesla K20 (and Titan supercomputer[www.anandtech.com]) so it also excels at GPU compute, partly because Nvidia unlocked[www.anandtech.com] Double Precision FFT for the first time in their mainstream consumer cards. The 680 (and by extension, the 690) are worse on this front because they use the mid-range GK104 chip. Many 580 owners have clung to their cards specifically because the 680 was a downgrade on that front.

If you decide to further upgrade later on through a multi-GPU setup, the Titan is more scalable because in theory (I say "in theory" because mainstream motherboards currently only have enough PCIe lanes to fully support up to 3 Titans) they could be arranged in a quad-sli setup, whereas a 690 is limited to dual SLI (2 x 2 GPUs/card).

I do wonder why you need such performance though. A 7970 should run virtually every game out there maxed at 1080p/60fps/60Hz. Perhaps you're running dual monitor or want to v-sync at 1600p? If you don't need the extra performance now it's always wise to wait for the next generation of cards or for a price drop on the Titan/690/7990 super cards.

Edit: Just noticed your comment that you'll be getting a 1440p monitor "fairly soon." At that resolution a 7970 (assuming it's the GHz edition or OC'd to that speed) should still hold up fine unless you have a desire to crank up AA in all your games while also staying near 60 fps. Whether you should buy such a card now also depends on your definition of "fairly soon." The AMD 8000 and Nvidia 700 series have been delayed to Q4 2013 so assuming you'll get the new monitor within the next 6 months and you feel you need to run your games at 16x AA, you probably needn't worry about waiting for them.

Fairly soon meant within the next month. The only game that my 7970 hasn't been able to run at a level I'm happy with so far is Crysis 3.

I have a 690. Its awsome nothing more to be said. As for the 7970's they are faster by only a slight margin. The Heat/power consumption/noise arnt worth it imo. a 690 can run on a good psu with like 550+watts lol so... its almost a nobrainer

well i would recomend 2 GTX 680's or a GTX TITAN

how about 2 factory oc'd 7950's

MSI R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC Radeon HD 7950
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127667

each is not far off from a 7970 and about $80 cheaper

Go all the way and get a Titan!

The 690 is currently about 200-300 cheaper than a titan offering 15-20% more performance, i would wait till the titan drops price if any drop before getting one.

This wouldn't be a bad option, but the OP already has a 7970. I guess it depends how badly he wants to upgrade his other PC. He also wants to avoid getting a larger power supply, otherwise I'd have recommend two 680's, which could be had for about $900 and push the most frames of any Nvidia setup (more than the 690) other than tri/quad SLI.

Where, pray tell? On Newegg the 690[www.newegg.com] and Titan[www.newegg.com] are the exact same price and still full MSRP because they're in such short supply. I highly doubt the 690 has ever been $700 unless it was like a one-time thing for Black Friday.

I got a 690 in a PC shop here for 700euros, while the titan is retailing for for £899 pounds €1037 or $1500 lol we are being ripped of :L j
